My 18-year-old daughter, Ilene, took her life while on testosterone in her college dorm room in October 2024. Her body lay undiscovered for four days while the university was celebrating National Coming Out Day. After her death, I couldn’t simply accept what happened. I began investigating—going through records, communications, medical documents, school policies, and everything I could find about the events leading up to her death. What I uncovered became my book, The Space You Left Behind. It is a nonfiction investigative memoir and exposé that goes beyond my personal grief. It examines what happened involving my daughter’s school and college, a pastor, DCF, mental-health and medical professionals, and the systems that, in my experience, increasingly isolated me from my own child as her parent. This is not simply a book about grief. It is about what happens when parents are pushed out of decisions concerning their own children and kept in the dark while institutions and professionals take over. I believe there are many stories supporting gender ideology, but far fewer stories examining what happens when parents question this path—and when parents are pushed aside. Now I’m looking for guidance. Ideally, I would like to find a publisher with a strong legal team, or a literary agent who understands both publishing and the potential for adapting a book like this for film or documentary. I’m also aware of self-publishing and am considering that route. If I go that direction, however, I would want to work with an attorney experienced in publishing, defamation/media law, and adapting nonfiction for the screen. I’m not a professional writer, and I don’t have a huge platform or industry connections. But I believe this story needs to be heard.
