Paul Allen said Bill Gates tried to cut his Microsoft stake to almost nothing while he was fighting cancer. Allen kept the shares. They later made him worth $40 billion. In the video below, Allen explains what he heard while walking past Gates’s office during radiation therapy. “They were basically talking about how they were planning to dilute my share down to almost nothing.” Steve Ballmer was in the room. Allen walked in and confronted them. Ballmer came to his house later that night to apologize. Gates did not. Allen left Microsoft shortly after, but he kept all of his shares. He was 30, cancer-free, and still owned nearly a third of the company. When Microsoft went public, that stake made him one of the richest people on Earth. At one point, Allen was worth an estimated $40 billion. Could you ever trust your co-founder again after hearing that conversation?

Three one-room schools alone already owe that much for 59 children, at $2,000 each. ⠀ Health Commissioner Mary Bassett imposed it on December 15, 2022. She called the sum conservative because it assumed only one day out of compliance. ⠀ Dygert Road was billed $52,000 for 26 children. Pleasant View was billed $46,000 for 23. ⠀ Shady Lane was billed $20,000 for 10. ⠀ Footnote 9 of the Second Circuit opinion records the state's view. Each day an unvaccinated student attends is a fresh violation and a fresh $2,000 fine. ⠀ Another day for those 59 children is another $118,000. Here’s the thing about “Keep theaters alive!” and “Go watch this film in the movie theater!” It’s a two-way agreement. The audience agrees to pay to see films in a theater only if: - The filmmakers are shooting scripts that have a thesis statement/intention/point. - The actors and director are giving it their all, and not phoning it in. - The edit has trimmed off all the fat. - The film isn’t some didactic exercise, intent on jamming a “lesson” into us. - The studio executives have paid close attention to the film from start to finish and have given the filmmakers useful notes to keep it all on-track. - The film is entertaining. - (And the theater managers are maintaining some order and decorum in the theaters themselves.) Otherwise, the audiences will continue to stay home and wait for the films to come online, so they can maybe watch five minutes of it or scrub through, and then turn it off. The film has to be excellent. Or at least try in that direction. Much of what is released is just not good enough.
