Brazil Election Voting Time Extension: A Timeline
Here is how the Brazil voting time extensions played out today. All times are Brasília time.
1:22 PM: Lula’s campaign asks the electoral court (TSE) for extra voting time in three Bahia cities, citing buses pulled off the streets.
3:42 PM: Lula’s campaign broadens the request.
3:50 PM: Flávio Bolsonaro’s campaign files its own request with the TSE: two more hours in 17 cities in São Paulo, Paraná, and Santa Catarina, citing rain, flooding, road closures, and power outages. It also asks the court to hold back presidential results until those cities finish voting.
The TSE president, Kassio Nunes Marques, sits on both requests. Jair Bolsonaro appointed him to the Supreme Court.
4:22 PM: With the clock running down, Lula’s campaign takes its request to the Supreme Court and asks for two extra hours nationwide.
4:33 PM: Justice Cristiano Zanin is assigned the case by random draw.
5:03 PM: Zanin’s order goes out. Polls stay open until 7 PM across Brazil. He later confirms BOTH CAMPAIGNS REPORTED voters struggling to reach the polls.
That’s the “stolen election.” Bolsonaro’s own campaign asked for the same two hours. Lula’s asked for them everywhere. A Bolsonaro appointee sat on both requests until the clock nearly ran out.
