For an area to be classified as Famine, three conditions must occur at the same time:
1. At least 20% of households must face an extreme lack of food.
2. Acute malnutrition must reach defined emergency thresholds among children.
3. The death rate must exceed two non-trauma deaths per 10,000 people per day.
That last number matters.
If hundreds of thousands of people were actually living under famine conditions for months, the expected death toll would be in the thousands.
Yet Gaza’s own Health Ministry reported 461 malnutrition-related deaths across the entire war.
That doesn't erase suffering or food insecurity in Gaza, but it does prove that Gaza is not, and was never, experiencing famine.
