That is wrong. Elephants are deeply social, intelligent animals. They form strong family bonds, communicate across distance, grieve, remember, learn from their herds and depend on stable social relationships. They are not temple property. They are not ceremonial objects. They are not symbols to be moved from one institution to another. Shiva is only six years old, and he is among the elephants being transferred from Assam to Tamil Nadu. Reports on these transfers describe journeys of roughly 3,000 km and have prompted animal-welfare and conservation groups to raise serious concerns about the animals’ welfare and the circumstances of their transfer. Just imagine what that means for the animal. Taken from everything familiar. Loaded onto a vehicle. Hours becoming days on the road. Strange sounds. Strange smells. Strange people. Constant vibration. Restricted movement. Heat. Noise. Fear. And at the end of that journey? Not freedom. Another life decided entirely by humans. Elephants are meant to roam, forage, choose companions and live complex social lives. No decorated enclosure or veterinary certificate turns captivity into freedom. Yet we celebrate the arrival, flowers, photos, crowds, ceremonies.. without thinking about what the elephant lost to get there. We call it devotion. We call it culture. The article says some elephants have died during this treatment, while others survive with serious physical suffering. What can look like "discipline" or "obedience" may be the result of fear, restraint, and repeated coercion. You think they tame and train elephants with treats and praise? Here is the wake-up call: sometimes obedience is created by breaking the animal first. They can be chained, beaten, threatened and forced into submission until resistance becomes dangerous or futile. Some do not survive. And even when the body survives, what happens psychologically should matter to us too. An elephant that has stopped resisting is not necessarily a happy or willing elephant. The 2017 report also points to the enormous economy surrounding captive elephants in Kerala, describing animals being leased for huge sums and earning substantial fees during festival season. Look at what this auto wala is doing to calmly sleeping dogs! These dogs can lose their trust in humans after encountering abusers like this and may become fearful or aggressive toward humans. This isn’t just my opinion. Research shows that dogs exposed to abuse and other adverse experiences are more likely to display fear and aggression later in life. A 2015 study, Behavioral and Psychological Characteristics of Canine Victims of Abuse, compared 69 abused dogs with 5239 companion dogs and found that abused dogs displayed "significantly higher rates of aggression and fear directed toward unfamiliar humans and dogs". A 2025 study involving 4497 dogs found that adverse experiences during the first six months of life, including abuse and relinquishment, were significantly associated with increased aggression and fearfulness in adulthood. These dog haters, like this auto wala, get this aggression from two sources: 1. personal failures, and 2. fake news spread online by dog haters. It’s high time to remove such cruelty from society.
