Had a great time at lunch today with old friend Pete Stemkowski. There were loads of laughs and we were there so long that the meal went into….triple overtime. Stemmer is still sharp as they come.

It’s hard to understand just what this meant unless you are of a certain age. Pre free agency. We grew up with these players. Personally, that’s why it meant so much to me to have Art Shamsky and Cleon Jones join me this past Sunday. Hopefully some day, Nolan McLean, Carson Benge, A. J. Ewing and fellow Mets of the current era will show up for someone else who might be a teenager today dreaming a similar dream. It’s that continuum that makes baseball so special and wonderful.

Fifty-seven years later I still get tears in my eyes watching this.

Thrilled to hear that Andy Green has been given a three year extension to stay on as manager. A.J. Ewing told me recently that Andy is the best motivational leader for whom he has ever played. I think he’s done a splendid job challenging and pushing the youngsters and getting his pitchers out at the right time. Zac Thornton said that getting that double play ball from Anthony Volpe to get through the 7th inning for the first time thanks to Andy leaving him in the game at that point helped him grow up a bit making him feel that he belonged. @Mets made a great decision.

Now that I’m an old, retired guy I want to publicly thank several Mets’ personnel who made yesterday one of the most memorable days of my life. Owners Steve and Alex Cohen, Katie Haas, Lauren O’Keefe, Laura South, Jay Horwitz, Zach Weber, Ethan Wilson, Tara Napoli and Lauren Hurvitz conspired to pivot from the original plan to bring my family and me to tears from their kindness and improvisation. Throw in the Mets in house production team and they took a dicey weather situation and turned it into a glowing rainbow. I am eternally grateful for their efforts and will never forget the fruits of their labor. Every one of them have a place in my heart.

How nice is this? Thank you, gentlemen. Guess I forgot to mention that I hardly play pickleball anymore. Refuse to sell out to make a desperation shot and wind up smashing my wrist or ripping up my knee, therefore missing months of golf.

People have asked recently about favorite games I’ve called during my career. This one has flown largely under the radar, but it’s right up there. Mets essentially locked up the NL East title that series en route to the National League pennant.

Is this legal?

It is such a pleasure to watch A.J. Ewing bounce back from a prolonged slump the way he has over the past several games. Andy Green has done a great job knowing when to push him and when to give him a day. Very encouraging sign from a promising young player.
