Will @Channel4News put their hands up? They were at the forefront of the campaign to destroy any chance of a Labour Govt and let in Boris Johnson. Almost immediately, the Covid Pandemic revealed the true horrors of ideological Conservatism. Corbyn was focussed on Social Care.

Worth noting that while Johnson and Hancock deservedly get much of the flak for this deadly failure, the minister who failed to protect the care sector was Helen Whately - who is now the Tory shadow minister pushing draconian benefit reforms
The Covid inquiry confirms that social care was an 'afterthought' for the government in the pandemic, as I and others claimed at the time. This symbolises how Westminster always sees it as a second-class public service of far less importance than the NHS. Utterly shameful.

If RADIO 4 extra goes, that will be the end of the world as we know it, a comfort blanket to so many as well as a lesson in the history of British culture through drama, comedy and light entertainment🤷🏼‍♂️
Replying to @wesbutters
@BBCRadio4Extra is my go to. Always find some vintage nugget from The Clitheroe Kid to a lost Hancock to Paul Temple. Yes, I could search thru the clunky archive, but half the joy is the surprise of the find.

As a GP practice we lost a third of Nursing home residents in the first wave due to the decisions made by leaders to discharge infected patients to homes It’s hugely concerning that this was done without mitigation of the risks #BREATHTAKING

The Telegraph's Tim Stanley has the magical ability to identify migrants just by looking at them on TV.
Tim Stanley (Telegraph) on the French riots: “People can go away & see, very obviously, migrants rioting” Marie Billon (RTL): “What do you call migrants? People who are not white? That doesn’t mean they’re not French. It’s not a big issue at the moment” #Newsnight

2020: Matt Hancock, "Right from the start we've tried to throw a protective ring around our care homes" 2026: Baroness Hallett, "The claim that a so called protective ring has be thrown around care homes right from the start was unfounded. Quite the opposite is true. The adult social care sector as a whole, appeared to be something of an after thought" My view: Matt Hancock said the government had tried to throw a “protective ring” around care homes. He repeated the claim in Parliament. Nadhim Zahawi later publicly backed it, while Boris Johnson defended the government’s handling when challenged. Now Baroness Hallett’s inquiry has rejected the claim as unfounded: care homes were not protected from the start; adult social care was treated as an afterthought. This was more than a failure of words. Patients were discharged from hospitals into care homes without routine testing, and care homes were not advised to isolate those arrivals. Staff faced shortages of PPE and testing, while residents and families bore the consequences. The inquiry describes a system that failed to plan for the risks and failed to put care homes at the centre of its response. What we saw was a collective failure—a collaboration of incompetence at the expense of life. The phrase “protective ring” offered reassurance while the protections people needed were missing. Thousands of families were left grieving, and care workers were left trying to cope with the consequences. Those responsible should face the findings honestly, explain how this happened and make sure the lessons lead to change. But the question remains, why is there almost no accountability for the actions government ministers took during covid?

What most people already understand, even without the economic terminology, is that firms like BlackRock operate less like investors and more like modern feudal landlords. They buy essential infrastructure, water networks, ports, energy grids, data centres, and other public necessities, often using vast amounts of borrowed money and paying prices that ordinary market participants cannot match. Once the acquisition is complete, the debt is pushed onto the acquired company itself. The result is simple: the public pays. Consumers repay that debt through higher water bills, rising energy prices, increased fees, and declining service quality. The infrastructure becomes a cash-extraction machine. Profits flow upward to shareholders and executives, while the financial burden flows downward to ordinary households. When the model inevitably breaks down, the consequences are socialised. Communities are left with crumbling infrastructure, polluted rivers and failing services. Thames Water's £14 billion debt mountain and repeated sewage scandals are a stark example of what happens when financial engineering takes precedence over public stewardship. The executives who loaded the company with debt have already collected their bonuses. The investors have already taken their returns. And when the system finally reaches its breaking point, taxpayers are expected to pick up the bill. Privatise the gains. Socialise the losses. That is the business model......
