As the Department of Education approaches its final days, many claims have been made about what its closure could mean for education in America. Some argue that the Department plays a critical role in leveling the playing field for disadvantaged students and improving educational outcomes. Yesterday, the Justice Department announced its finding that the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine discriminated based on race in granting and denying admission to its 2023-2025 incoming classes. “Unfortunately, at UCSF Medical School, MCAT scores and undergraduate GPAs have taken a backseat to race,” said @AAGDhillon. “Aspiring doctors should be admitted based on their qualifications. The @Heritage index measures whether parents can exit, inspect, and redirect funds—choice programs, academic transparency, teacher pathways, spending ROI, and civics. Florida leads in choice and transparency. The cellar is Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, Rhode Island, and Maine. That ranking is the empirical form of an old claim: parents are the first educators, and a captive district is a poor fiduciary of a child’s mind. When dollars follow the student instead of the system, the principal-agent problem shrinks. When they do not, you get more administration, less civics, and a 22% national eighth-grade civics proficiency rate. @KevinRobertsTX is right. This is patently false based on the data. Students that enter the choice programs in Wisconsin, on average, are significantly behind their public school peers. This makes sense—families don’t often change schools if everything is going well.
