[FM MOTEGI’s visit to the United States] ―Message from New York― I have completed almost all of my engagements at the UN General Assembly. This time, I attended numerous ministerial meetings and clearly communicated Japan’s positions and views on important issues such as maritime security, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz; nuclear disarmament; global health including infectious diseases; UN Security Council reform; and the question of Palestine. Furthermore, I worked to strengthen coordination with allies and like-minded countries through frameworks such as the G7 and Japan-U.S.-ROK cooperation, and engaged in in-depth discussions on regional situations concerning North Korea, the Middle East, and Ukraine. Moreover, I had productive meetings with the foreign ministers of countries such as Nepal, which has suffered flooding, and Fiji, which plays an important role in the Pacific Islands region, Pakistan, and the Maldives. As Prime Minister TAKAICHI emphasized in her statement at the General Debate, Japan, as a peace-loving nation, will renew its commitment to multilateralism, building on the seventy years we have walked alongside the UN and is determined to fulfill its responsibilities in the international community through the two indispensable tasks of establishing international rules and providing support on the ground. A series of important diplomatic engagements lies ahead this fall. I will continue to steer Japan’s diplomacy, building on the outcomes of this visit.

China again posted on X their view on the so-called “enemy State” clauses in the Charter of the United Nations, implying that these obsolete clauses remain in effect. Such postings are incompatible with relevant resolutions that were adopted at the United Nations and China supported to adopt. China cast a vote in favor of the UNGA RES 1995, recognizing the clauses to have become obsolete. China also joined the consensus on the UNGA RES 2005, expressing the resolve of the leaders of the Member States to delete the clauses. We expect China, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, to respect these resolutions that China supported to adopt. Since the end of World War II, Japan has consistently contributed to peace and prosperity in the international community as a peace-loving nation. This is widely recognized in the international community. Japan will continue to clearly articulate and communicate its views and policies as Prime Minister Takaichi did with her general debate speech.

It was an honor to meet with three legislators from the Japanese Diet who represent the Japan-U.S. Parliamentary Friendship League at the Capitol today. The U.S.-Japan alliance is a critical cornerstone of peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific. The Japan-US alliance is built on enduring people-to-people connections. DMV area grassroots leaders gathered at the Old Residence for our Grassroots Exchange Strategy Meeting to share best practices, tackle shared challenges, and explore new opportunities for collaboration.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to join Ambassador of Japan Shigeo Yamada to celebrate the former participants and contributors of People-to-People Exchange Programs between Japan and the U.S…!! As a former participant in the Japan Exchange Teaching program, I know firsthand how these experiences build lasting relationships, strengthen cultural understanding, and deepen the important friendship between our two countries. We welcomed students from Gakushuin University to the Old Residence to learn about public diplomacy. We thank them for their continued interest in Japan-US relations and wish them all the best with their studies!
