When I speak to a company, I want people to leave with something they can use on a random Tuesday morning. A good story can get a room's attention. I've got stories from the SEAL Teams, from being wounded in Iraq, and from rebuilding my life and career afterward. A little over a week ago, I celebrated my 19th "rebirthday." 🎂 Most wounded warriors call the day they were wounded their "alive day." I call mine my rebirthday, because on September 13, 2007, I was given an incredible second chance at life. Shot eight times. Nearly killed. Everything changed after that. VA SECRETARY UNDERMINES TRUMP WHILE EYEING SENATE RUN Persistent rumors say @SecVetAffairs Doug Collins plans to resign early to run for US Senate in Georgia. I've long suspected that's why he's been weak and timid in advancing Trump's VA reform agenda. Administration and congressional sources say he is quietly whipping House Republicans against the Take Care of America's Veterans Act — working members in person when he travels and emailing congressional offices directly. Worse, people on Capitol Hill and inside the VA believe his own staff intentionally botched the rollout of the VA rule language to the media to tank the bill. And what has Collins actually delivered for veterans? No key wins. Several Capitol Hill sources say he's claiming victories that aren't his — like the 38 new VA clinics now serving veterans. Meanwhile, he's undermining President Trump's campaign promise to build a new VA hospital in New Hampshire, and he's broken promises to members of Congress on VA healthcare pilots that would give veterans better access to care. Why fight a bill that helps veterans? Ego. Collins is thin-skinned, and he's furious from being cut out of the process that developed it. And he was cut out for one reason: incompetence. If he's not fully committed to reforming the VA and passing TCAVA, he should step down now. Veterans are dying on his watch.

Audie Murphy was rejected by the Marines and paratroopers for being too small, but he ultimately joined the U.S. Army and became the most decorated American combat soldier of World War II. In January 1945, near Holtzwihr, France, Murphy climbed onto a burning tank destroyer and single-handedly fought off a German assault with a .50-caliber machine gun. Despite being wounded and exposed to enemy fire from three sides, he held his position for nearly an hour before returning to his men and leading a counterattack. His actions earned him the Medal of Honor before his 20th birthday. Murphy’s courage did not end on the battlefield. After returning home, he became a successful Hollywood actor, but privately struggled with severe combat trauma and an addiction to sleeping pills. At a time when few public figures spoke openly about the psychological effects of war, Murphy shared his experiences and pushed for the government to take the suffering of returning veterans more seriously. Ryan Holiday reflects on the different forms Murphy’s courage took throughout his life.
