The amount of chart crime from “new media” is astonishing. Yes, let's compare the avg. square footage of an HEB in Bumblefuck, Arkansas to New York City real estate prices. This is either stupid or dishonest. I can't decide which is worse.
NYC's government-run grocery store is expected to open in 2029 at a $30M cost to taxpayers More charts: a16z.news/p/charts-of-the-we…

Why did they even bother to call it Mamdani's Mart? Just add a hammer and sickle and be done with it.

No matter how you cut it $3333/sqft is a ridiculously high build out cost. My guess is they want it nice and “green” and use 100% union labor which will skyrocket costs. NY retail rent is high but build out costs aren’t particularly high there. Comparable to LA / SF etc and I’d say 20-30% higher than other regions. Companies do spend a lot more per sqft there because it’s high value real estate not because it’s expensive.

It’s intentional dishonest framing because they think their readers are media illiterate retards, like the founders of A16Z.

Read the footnote moron; upper bound for second line item is in west village Also you realize that 3k psf is crazy right? Also do you really think a govt project with no specific goals / accountability will be remotely competitive with what the private sector would do?

There’s no HEB in Arkansas. Enjoy the income tax and the wealth tax.

He is paying $0 to acquire the real estate. Yet is spending $30M to open a grocery store over 3 years (you and I could open one in a few months). I’m having a hard time determining if your false outage is stupid or dishonest.

You want to bet $30 million that it doesn't cost $30 million to build a grocery store in New York City of the size?

I can't imagine being this stupid or dishonest enough to defend Mamdani's wasteful spending and horrible policies.

a16z new media is obviously a propaganda machine for "american dynamism" the $1.7B they invested in mass surveillance and AI kill bots is at risk because of public backlash

In 2026, the coverage looks different. This months headlines alone include multiple cities cutting contracts nationwide, a police officer charged for stalking his ex with Flock, and Ring canceling their partnership after Super Bowl backlash

Do people not realize that $30M is chump change for something that will serve its purpose for decades?
