Like Hollywood has award shows that make Hollywood seem really important, AI has effects on "knowledge workers" (e.g. pundits) that inspire them to treat AI as really important. It's not *not* important; it's just not as important as the punditry see it and tell us to see it.

No matter how you measure it, local governments used to be the most fiscally important level of government in the U.S., until the New Deal and World War 2 massively centralized the American state. After WW2, we slowly decentralized from the feds to the states - until 2009.
