"New Americans": the label that folds illegal aliens into Utah's legal-immigrant success story. These pages are from the 2016 New American Economy report. That report and related Utah materials brand all foreign-born residents as “New Americans,” then lead with aggregate tax and entrepreneurship figures while treating legal immigrants and unauthorized immigrants as one category. The cover and the summary page define “New Americans” as any foreign-born person and open with the claim that they are “vital” to Utah’s economy. The bullets that follow—272,134 immigrants (8.5% of the population), top origin countries including Mexico, India, Venezuela, Brazil, and Canada, $613 million in state and local taxes plus $1.1 billion in federal taxes, and nearly 10% entrepreneurs, are totals for the entire foreign-born population. They are not broken out by legal status. The report’s own later table, under the heading “Undocumented Immigrants,” puts the unauthorized share at 88,204 people, or 31.6% of Utah’s immigrant population and 2.6% of the state. That section lists $228.1 million in taxes attributed to that group and $2.3 billion in household income, then folds those figures back into the broader “New Americans” story. Naturalization and voting-power numbers (121,131 naturalized citizens, 116,661 eligible to vote) sit on the same page, so economic claims about the whole foreign-born population and political claims about citizens are presented side by side. The result is a single banner; “New Americans” that lets advocates cite the combined tax and business totals as proof immigrants “do more good than harm,” without the headline numbers distinguishing people admitted under the law from those present without authorization. Utah business and political voices that circulated this report used that combined framing.

Amy Coney Barrett was supposed to be the conservative hammer. Instead she keeps siding with the liberals when it actually matters. That's not a Justice. That's a bait-and-switch in a robe. And it's terrifying.

This day is profoundly painful for so many New Yorkers. It marks three years since the horrific war crimes of October 7. On that day, Hamas killed more than 1,100 Israelis and abducted 251 others. We grieve alongside our many friends and neighbors who still carry that unthinkable loss. The suffering did not begin nor end that day. It instead continued through the Israeli government’s devastating, ongoing genocide in Gaza, in which it has killed more than 74,000 Palestinians—including more than 21,000 children. Even since the so-called ceasefire, more than 1,400 Palestinians have been killed. That suffering has intensified with every Israeli bomb dropped on ambulances waiting outside hospitals, every drone strike targeting a residential building or journalist, and every shipment of food aid turned away at a border crossing. Many New Yorkers are reckoning with this unbearable grief, and we mourn alongside them – all while knowing that our tax dollars fund these war crimes. Three years later, we must refuse to accept a world in which occupation and apartheid continue, where war crimes are met with impunity, and our federal government continues its complicity with every arms shipment. To honor the dead, we must fight for a world in which every person can live with freedom, safety, and dignity.
