Why do muscle fibres shrink with age?
Not because myofibrils get smaller — because there are fewer of them.
We followed this from whole-muscle down to individual myofibrils, in humans and mice, across ageing and disuse.

1/ Why do muscles atrophy with aging and disuse?
Is it because each tiny little myofibril gets smaller… or is it because we lose myofibrils?
In our new study, we addressed this in humans and mice. biorxiv.org/cgi/content/shor…

Check out the latest pre-print from our lab, the work of star graduate student @mmsonsalla! If you (a mouse who is extremely online) reduces dietary protein and increase dietary carbohydrates, does it matter what type of carbohydrates you are eating? Find out from our paper:
For those who are wondering about the human relevance of our BCAA work, a new paper showing dietary BCAAs are associated with plasma BCAAs and plasma BCAAs are associated with multiple Cardiometabolic risk factors
Excited to share our new study, spearheaded by talented former graduate student Kübra B. Akkaya-Colak!

Great discussion of dietary protein and aging in @ScienceNews today "The protein craze may not be for everyone", spurred in part by @baileyknopf 's new review article entitled "The hallmarks of protein and amino acid restriction in aging and longevity"

Branched chain aminos (e.g. leucine & valine) help build muscle but also activate mTOR. Here, Lamming & team report that restricting valine extends the lifespan of male mice 23%, indicating high protein diets deserve scrutiny from a longevity perspective 🐭
I am delighted to be able to share the latest study from the @LammingLab, “Lifelong restriction of dietary valine has sex-specific benefits for health and lifespan in mice” led by former graduate student @mariahcalubag!
Valine restriction improves metabolic health in mice, promotes leanness and glycemic control across ages, and reduces frailty, cancer prevalence and senescent cell burden in both sexes while increasing median male lifespan by 23%.
