Happy to share our new paper in @Nature led by staff scientist Xuejing Liu @Jessielxj2. We report identification of a UCP1-independent pathway of brown fat thermogenesis involving ATP-consuming metabolism of BCFA in peroxisomes. #Obesity #T2D nature.com/articles/s41586-0… @WashUDeptMed

Our body (cells) have fuel preference, e.g., burning fat vs. carbohydrates, which depends on the environment and nutritional states. How do cells decide which fuels to use?  Our new study found that carnitine biosynthesis is crucial for fuel switching science.org/doi/10.1126/scie…

Peroxisome-dependent ether lipid down regulation is also a prominent feature of ME/CFS patient lipid profiles. Our prior work and this new study call for a clinical trial of sodium phenylbutyrate that can boost peroxisome function on Long COVID 🙏🙏@NIAIDNews
I find it interesting that sodium phenylbutyrate was found in this study and even @Jie_Immunology's science.org/doi/10.1126/scie… to help reverse this in lungs and now gut? Clinical trial soon?

Excited to see this work published in Nature Metabolism! This study provides new insight into how normally stable adipocytes can be mobilized under extreme metabolic stress, independent of sympathetic signaling. Congrats to @schellerlab and the team!
Very happy to start 2026 by sharing our new manuscript in Nature Metabolism.✨ By studying the constitutive adipocytes in the bone marrow, we identified a brain-mediated pathway that bypasses the SNS to evoke massive fat loss. 🧠🦴 Full article here: lnkd.in/gH7eHv4r

Thank you @NIH for highlighting our recent @Nature paper! Extremely grateful for the support that made this work possible.
Unlike the white fat cells you may be familiar with, brown fat cells use energy to produce heat. NIH-supported researchers identified a previously unrecognized way these cells use energy. The findings suggest a potential way to promote weight loss by increasing heat generation in brown fat cells. bit.ly/3LSxeSK

Happy to share new work led by outstanding former grad student Kubra Akkaya! Following up on our previous work, we show that Stearoyl-CoA Desaturases (SCDs) regulate intestinal stem and progenitor cell function and proliferation, shaping epithelial homeostasis and regeneration.
