What do the public think of Andy Burnham? Word clouds are rarely flattering for politicians and Burnham has his fair share of negatives. But unlike his predecessor Burnham has bigger positives coming through. Personally think the prominence of “Trying” is particularly important.

Is that trying as in ‘doing his best’ or trying as a bit of ‘a pain in the arse’?

That seems more negative than the previous one I saw from you, or is that just my imagination?

Surprised "cringe" doesn't feature given all the barm cake type clips.

"He's trying" is a wonderfully understated British way of saying "he's chuffing useless".

Trying is an adjective that means hard to bear, annoying, or difficult to endure.

Your saying Keir Starmer wasn’t trying? - and you refer to the man who delivered a Labour Government as the predecessor - good to see a different way of doing politics - enjoy the rest of your short lived time in a rarefied Labour run country

Trying also means not succeeding, failing if you will.

I don’t think it refers to trying hard, more, he is particularly trying to put up with!

To be fair he’s only been in the job a short while and he’s spent most of the time ducking the big issues. Give it time.

Starmer word cloud. 2022. When still Opposition Leader. Pre-PM.

It follows this @JLPartnersPolls word cloud for Starmer. Being seen as boring isn’t necessarily an issue - many crave a serious leader after Boris Johnson - but failure to cut through is. Labour MPs tell me it’s not about detailed policy - it’s about what he actually stands for.

Depends if the positives last when it is more than just Burnham promising things. I liked 'Northern' and 'Man' as neutrals in the bit you don't show!! Go on - I dare you to do a monthly poll on whether people think they have any growth in their postcode. Will you?

He's in a bind really. He's doing OK until he actually does something. Ten seconds after, or in fact during, the Budget, he'll be back down at Starmer-levels probably.

Seems okay. Finally good to hear a party leader talking about social care complete overhaul.

Remarkable, isn't it, that public opinion is more positive if you are not being attacked & denigrated daily by the media and your opponent is no longer regularly referred to as "the next PM".
