I get the point. But as a mother of three who sacrificed to give my children the best possible education ( even though we couldn’t really afford it), I don’t know why she couldn’t see the obvious : sending her child to a failing school raised the chances her child would fail. Why take that risk with your own child ESPECIALLY when you were going to drop your kid off and then ignore what was going on in the school for several hugely critical years? NYC public schools are run by unions who refuse to hold teachers and administrators accountable. That’s their job. That’s what the dues are for: to make sure teachers never get fired, never get assigned to a school they don’t want once they have seniority and tenure , get paid no matter what they do or how badly they fail the children. They even promote ineffective administrators to even more responsible positions. The union then spends a fortune on political donations to make sure the people who get elected continue to protect their ability to keep doing what they do. They are in fact one of the biggest donors to the Dem party. This was obvious to literally every parent in NYC I knew during those parenting years who were trying to stay in the city with kids . Some chose charters , but those who chose a public school were on top of it from day one. Others moved or found a way to pay for private or Catholic. Some even home schooled. The advice I got early on from a parent with older kids stuck with me: you can make public schools work if you accept the fact the BOE can change the rules anytime and you will have to move your child, and you have to stay on top of everything every day. Fixing our schools is not impossible. But the solutions are not the same tired and ineffective approaches NYC leaders have been pushing for decades. There has to be much more to this story than meets the eye. @JeniferRajkumar is an excellent assembly member who represented her district very well and is very well liked by her constituents. This was a very low turnout election unfortunately and the DSA did their thing in the part of the commie corridor that is in her district. She did very well everywhere else. She was targeted by Mamdani and his allies. Why? Her record is center left. She is not the old guard. She is, however, the only Hindu member of the assembly. What made them put a target on her back? She has too much integrity to speak negatively of anyone and she ran a fair race. So why? What happened here? Who was behind this besides Mamdani? Allow me to make a bit of a clarification. City people--ACTUAL city people--do NOT hate cars. New York City NATIVES do NOT hate cars. Baltimore City natives like myself do NOT hate cars. People drive within New York City all the time. Transit workers, cops, firefighters, and paramedics ABSOLUTELY drive cars in the city. Doctors and nurses/CNPs have their own license plates to apply for and use on their personal vehicles here in NY. Even in neighborhoods in NYC that are well-served by the subway and/or commuter rail in the suburbs, there are people who will still drive to the parking lots at the stations, or somewhere close to a train station (like where I filmed earlier). The automobile is STILL considered aspirational and necessary in NYC...by people who are ACTUALLY New Yorkers. The ones who pretend to hate cars are downwardly mobile, white liberal psychopaths who grew up in the suburbs. They're mostly spoiled children in adult bodies, with upper middle-class parents who dote on them like they're still in third grade or some shit. These assholes don't really hate cars. They hate freedom of individual movement, outside of THEIR control. Keep in mind, these are people who called the cops on Black homeowners grilling and sitting out on their stoops...then made TikToks of themselves on their stoops. THAT is who the modern gentrifier is. THAT is who actually hates cars here.

New York City voters: Charter revisions are boring and inside baseball but this year Mamdani’s comrades are rousing a couple of real doozies that need your attention. Prop 1-4: These are very dangerous charter revisions that move us toward authoritarianism faster than you can say Karl Marx. To explain, it’s not just that the socialists want to turn the streets over to car share and delivery apps, as they have done in socialist cities elsewhere, but it’s how they want to do this. They want to eliminate community input. For those of us who’ve been involved in every street fight these last 10 years or more, it’s like the occupying army came in and said it will be no more talking of how this will go down. The streets belong to us now and we’re going to do whatever we want with them . It’s our way or the highway. Goodbye community board input. The last thing we want to do is concentrate power over our streets in a DOT run by people beholden to special interest billionaire car share and delivery apps. They want to make NYC and especially Manhattan their piggy bank. So if you cannot afford a garage and all the taxes and tolls ( most working people cannot) the only way in and out will be to pay an app or take unsafe, unreliable public transit. That may work for some people but not for families, the elderly, disabled, pet owners, first responders, healthcare, workers, and others who work long shifts and early or late hours. Huge impact on safety too as NYPD and FDNY will be cut out of the loop. The street takeover is a top reason why families are fleeing NYC for the suburbs and red states. I raised 3 kids in Manhattan and if this was the direction of NYC when my kids were born I would have been out of here too. Imagine 3 small children and all the gear to visit grandparents, attend sport events, pick them up from school when they had to stay late and missed the bus, or just take an affordable weekend trip to get out of the dense city ? I spent more than 40 years as a teacher, and I remember September 11, 2001 like it was yesterday. Today, roughly a third of Americans weren’t even alive when those attacks happened. Teaching 9/11 should not depend on the politics or personal preferences of an individual teacher. Every student should learn what happened, who we lost, the heroism we witnessed, who attacked us, and how that day changed our country. If we expect young Americans to become informed citizens, we have to teach them their history. 9/11 belongs in the curriculum. Period. Any teacher offended by the idea that students should be taught about 9/11 is proving exactly why it needs to be required. And if a legislator supports a law requiring every teacher to teach it, the problem is not the legislator. We have forgotten far too much already. Just look at some of the people we elect, the things we now excuse, and the causes people take to the streets to defend, including those who openly celebrated the murder of Americans after 9/11. Never forget means teaching the next generation exactly what happened.
