188,000 people work for the NHS in Scotland. Apparently 1000 of them can afford to live outside of Scotland. That's the story.

Surely they should be taxed where their salary is paid, not where they live.

That's not how it works!

At least the Scottish nhs university workers got their tuition free and don’t have the 9% grad tax. Win win for them!

And yet migration from England to Scotland outnumbers migration the other way

My son works in the NHS in Scotland. He went private and reduced his NHS hours. He now has formed his own company..The surgeons are smarter thsn the SNP.

There is no evidence in that article supporting the headline. 1. Half the entire Scottish total is Lothian, how do we know they haven't moved due to Edin costs? 2. How many applied from Eng because of higher Scot salaries and just didn't move up, rather than the vice versa?

More needs to be said about the 67.5% Scottish tax trap. @DanNeidle

And what frustrates me is people often think Laffer is making a political point when it is actually pure economics.

So why are the English flowing in to Scotland in numbers unheard of? House prices where I live in Glasgow have quadrupled in last 5 years, sell in a week. The English are taking over, fleeing English shitholes they voted Tory for

🤔 sure they are 😂 Increase has more to do with rise in remote working than rise in taxes. There are only 2 Scottish hospitals near border, which are 24 & 27 miles from it. It’s not like the Welsh/English border. It would cost more to commute than just pay the tax

It always amazes me how people like you either swallow or promote this bollocks. The ONS recently provided ststs that show Scotland has the largest amount of net inter UK migration. Stop talking pish.

Shocker. Who could have seen that coming? I pumped my cash through VCT’s and ended up paying less tax than I would have done south of the border. Recent evidence that Scotland’s high taxes are a loss making policy indicates most people used similar tactics.

It’s hard to see how any serious NHS worker, especially clinicians, can live in England and do a full time job in Scotland, unless they have a family home in England and a pied à terre in Scotland. That would potentially be dishonest and they should be pursued by HMRC.

It’s not just higher income tax in Scotland but also cost of living. My council tax is far lower for the same equivalent house size with better services than in Scotland. All the things the SNP has tampered with has been detrimental.

It’s a 2 hour commute from Newcastle & longer from Northumberland to Edinburgh. I’d hazard a guess at a ramp up in tax avoidance or people being paid exorbitant salaries to afford that round trip!

It's profoundly stupid not progressive. People can just move.

They’d have to live in France or somewhere to avoid the U.K. tax regime wouldn’t they?

Most NHS staff earn below higher tax bands where Scottish rates diverge; median NHS wages face similar or lower tax than England. Border living reflects housing and geography, not top-rate tax avoidance by average nurses.

Scotland has a better social security net. You know those little people who don't have a second residence in London? Those people.
