A big step forward and a testament to all the carers who’ve campaigned against this injustice. But is the government really saying: if carers get a pay rise or work more hours, it will take back every penny of their extra income? A 100% tax rate? That can’t be right.

An update on maternity services at St Helier Hospital 👇 After speaking to staff and residents and reading the independent reports, I’m clear that we need to find a way to keep these vital services on site while repairs to the pipework take place. One particularly concerning thing I’ve heard is that, if neonatal services were moved from St Helier to other hospitals, those hospitals simply would not be able to cope. I’ll be making the case to the NHS Trust and the Health Minister to keep services at St Helier.

This is somewhere between deeply irresponsible and a lie. HMRC will be able to "seize money" from people who owe tax, aren't disputing it, but just fail to pay. That's people who cause the rest of us to pay more tax.

I have written to the Health Minister requesting an urgent meeting to save maternity services at St Helier. When the Government delayed St Helier’s funding for a new hospital until the 2030s, we warned that this is too long a wait for the hospital’s crumbling buildings. We now understand that St Helier may need to close the maternity unit due to concerns about the safety of the water system and ageing pipework. Patient safety must come first. But it is vital that every effort is made to address these risks while keeping these essential services at St Helier.
