הייתי בהקרנת הבכורה של הסרט נז״א בארה״ב. השקה בלב מנהטן, בלינקולן סנטר, מול קהל אמריקאי בפסטיבל הסרטים של ניו יורק. רציתי לצפות בעצמי, ואני מרגישה שפוספסו כאן בדיונים כמה נקודות מהותיות, ושחלק מעמיתיי גם עשו הנחות ליובל אברהם. דיסקליימר: אני כותבת את זה מנקודת מבט של עיתונאית בארה״ב כבר מספר שנים, מכירה היטב את השיח הקיצוני בשמאל ובימין האמריקאי, ורואה גם מהעיניים האלה את הסרט, שמתוזמן בהשקה בארה״ב רגע לפני אירועי הזיכרון של 7 באוקטובר. כמו שחלק מעמיתיי כבר אמרו, ברמה העיתונאית גם אני ראיתי בעיות מקצועיות של תיאורי אווירה והערכות כלליות שהמרואיינים נותנים, ללא דרך אמיתית לאמת, לבחון או למסמך אותן. יובל אברהם הציג את עצמו על הבמה הערב כעיתונאי חוקר – כלומר הוא אמור לקבל על עצמו סטנדרטים עיתונאיים, אלא שהסרט במקרים רבים לא עומד בהם על המסך. כישראלית בקהל חשוב לציין גם שיש גם תקלות תרגום בכתוביות שהופכות אמירות של חיילים שהופכות אמירות של חיילים לקשות יותר. אבל אני רוצה לדבר על נקודה רחבה יותר שחומקת לה בתוך הדיון הפנים-ישראלי, ולדעתי יש לה השלכות מרחיקות לכת – וזה החיבור המטריד שהסרט עושה בין המלחמה בעזה, לבין עצם הלגיטימיות של קיומה של מדינת ישראל בכלל. באופן מהותי המסר של הסרט נוגע למשהו הרבה יותר גדול מהמלחמה הנוכחית – בעיניי הסרט מייצר נראטיב שקרי ומשוואות שגויות שמנתצות את לגיטימיות המפעל הציוני מראשיתו, מקעקעות את הישראלים באשר הם בהתבסס על סיפורים שרובם המוחלט לא זוכים לתאריך או מידע קונקרטי, וכוללים הרבה מאוד הערכות של מרואיינים שמדברים באופן לא ספציפי. הסרט פונה לפרוגרס השמאלני האנטישמי בשפה ובמונחים שלהם, וכך גם לימין הקיצוני. נז״א מציג עדויות קשות, יש ערך אמיתי בלחקור ולבקר, ורצוי שנדע לעשות את זה. אלא שבסרט הזה, במבחן התוצאה, ניתנת באופן מניפולטיבי במה ולגיטימציה לטיעונים נגד קיומה של מדינת ישראל וחיים ישראלים בארץ ישראל. הסרט מאשים דה-פקטו את הישראלים כולם, וכמעט את עצם קיומם במקום מושבם. יוצרי הסרט מסבירים שהמקרים שמתוארים נעשים בידי האליטה הישראלית: ״השמאלנים״ במודיעין הם אלה שנוהגים כך – מעין אמירה שהצופה הרגיל מבין ממנה: אם אפילו הם מדברים ככה על רצח עזתים ולקחו בכך חלק, אז רק תדמיינו מה אחרים אומרים ועושים. זה גם משתקף מהצילום על גגות תל אביב. ניסיון לקעקע את העיר היחידה שעוד איכשהו נתפסת מחוץ לגבולות ישראל כעיר ליברלית דמוקרטית. ישראלים בתל אביב (ומחוצה לה) נאבקו על קיומה של ישראל כדמוקרטיה, פיזית, במחאות, וספגו אלימות, כולל במחאות להפסקת אש בעזה. יובל אברהם מסמן בדרך לא מאוד עקלקלה את התל אביבים השמאלנים האלטיסטים כפעילים של ג׳נוסייד, רצח עם. כלומר, המסר הוא: אפילו האליטה, זו שהייתם חושבים שהיא ביקורתית ושיש לה עמוד שדרה מוסרי – אפילו הם – בהמוניהם – בני זונות רוצחים. ומכאן זה משליך כמובן על כל השאר. המסקנות של הצופים הן לא על אחריות היוצר, אבל העריכה מאוד ברורה ומכוונת למסקנה אחת. בעולם של דימויים ותמונות הסרט עושה עריכה מניפולטיבית להקמת העיר העברית הראשונה – ומייצר קו ישיר בין הקמת תל אביב ל׳ג׳נוסייד׳ כלשון הסרט. הסרט קופץ ומערבב בין תמונות של הקמת העיר תל אביב, תוך ניתוץ בתים ערבים באותם ימים, ואז, בקרוס, קאט ל: השטחת עזה, ׳ג׳נוסייד׳. החיבור הזה מוחק בתוכו כל דבר טוב וחיובי, ממאמצי שלום, ועד תרבות וקיום חברתי בישראל, באבחה אחת. כשרואים את הסצינה הזאת וקושרים אותה לקונטקסט של הסרט, דבר אחד ברור – הג׳נוסייד שאתם רואים שמתרחש בעזה – בדרך זו קמה ומתקיימת מדינת ישראל, באופן לא לגיטימי. כלומר, הסרט עושה שימוש בכלים קולנועיים אפקטיביים ובסיפורים שחולקים חיילי צה״ל, באופן שמקעקע את כל אירוע הקמת המדינה וקיומה כאירוע ג׳נוסיידי. המסקנה של הצופה היא: החטא הוא קדמון וכל העץ מורעל. אני מכירה היטב את התפיסה האנטישמית והאנטי ישראלית בקרב קיצונים בשמאל ובימין האמריקאי והבינלאומי. אני חיה בתוך האקלים הזה, אני מדברת עם האנשים האלה (שהולכים ומתרבים) יום יום. הקטע הזה בסרט הוא במקרה הטוב היתממות, ובמקרה הרע האשמה שכל כולה שיתוף פעולה והתכתבות עם הטענה לפיה אין מקום לישות ציונית בארץ ישראל, ומתחברת ישר לקריאות ששמעתי במו אוזניי בהפגנות שסיקרתי: ״מהנהר ועד הים״ ו-״לבנה אחר לבנה, חומה אחר חומה, ישראל תיפול״. יובל אברהם חוזר ואומר שהסרט הזה נועד לישראלים, אבל בפועל זה בדיוק הרגעים שהרגשתי שהישראלים היו גם תפאורה למען נראטיבים נוספים. הסרט חסר בקונטקסט. אין מספיק על 7 באוקטובר. אין קונטקסט על מי הם פעילי חמאס. ואני יכולה להרחיב עוד ועוד >>>

Make it make sense; why didn’t Cairo also speak to Doha and here them to tell the Hamas leadership not to go forward with an attack that would plunge the whole region into a huge war? Why didn’t western intelligence pick up on this warning? Cairo must have known that a big attack would create disaster in Gaza and potentially affect the Sinai. Why not make sure it didn’t happen?

If Macklemore really wants to show solidarity with Palestinians he should perform at this 22,000 capacity venue in the Palestinian city Rawabi, in the West Bank, which I’ve visited twice (this is my photo). It’s the biggest open air venue of its sort in the Middle East and hosts international acts. And since he’s such a big advocate for gay people he should definitely sing “Same Love”. He could even replicate his 2014 Grammy’s performance when a bunch of same sex couples got married.

As I’ve noted before, I didn’t fully get this until Oct 7. When Jews are attacked, not only are they considered uniquely undeserving of sympathy, but it excites bloodlust and emboldens more hate and attacks. Why? Because if you think of yourself as not being racist as most people like to do - even more so if your identity revolves around being an “anti-racist” - then to deal with the cognitive dissonance of justifying or celebrating attacks on Jews, and be able to continue deluding yourself that you’re a righteous person lording it over those who are not, you have to convince yourself the Jews are not actually victims, that attacking them is a morally incumbent act and that they had it coming. And in order to believe that, you have to tell yourself the Jews are evil. The reasons change throughout history - they’re Christ-killers, well-poisoners, baby-killers, race-contaminators, communists, capitalists, settler-colonialists etc but whatever the haters tell themselves to feel good about attacking Jews and that this time they’re in the right side of history, makes them hate Jews more and spurs them on. That’s why John Minto said on Oct 7 the Hamas attacks were understandable and was organising an anti-Israel rally 2 days later. And that’s why I say I don’t know where and how all this ends. Because it seems to be this self-perpetuating ratcheting spiral.

The truth about the Palestinian “Nakba,” by the numbers: The popular picture of the Nakba is hundreds of thousands of innocent people driven far from their homeland, never to return. The actual 1948 numbers tell a more complicated story for both Palestinians and Jews. On the eve of the war, Mandatory Palestine had roughly 1.2–1.3 million Arabs and 600,000–650,000 Jews. After the fighting: • Approximately 150,000–160,000 Palestinians remained inside the 1949 armistice lines of the new State of Israel and later received Israeli citizenship (or residency that converted to citizenship). • Roughly 400,000–460,000 Arabs already living in the West Bank and about 80,000 already living in the Gaza Strip remained in their original homes. These areas lay outside the Israeli armistice lines and came under Jordanian and Egyptian control. • Roughly 270,000–280,000 who left what became Israel went to the West Bank. • Roughly 160,000–200,000 who left what became Israel went to the Gaza Strip. Most of those who left what became Israel therefore stayed inside historic Palestine. The farthest plausible relocation from a depopulated village in what became Israel to Gaza or the West Bank was only 120–140 miles. Those who left historic Palestine entirely (beyond Israel + West Bank + Gaza) numbered on the order of 250,000–300,000. Principal destinations were Lebanon (~100,000), Syria (~75,000–90,000), and Transjordan/East Bank (~70,000–100,000), plus smaller numbers in Egypt and Iraq. This is a local relocation - still within the surrounding Levant area, many of which, their ancestors came from. Jews were displaced too. Historians estimate 60,000–70,000 Jews became internally displaced within the territory that became Israel during the 1948 war (Jewish Quarter of Jerusalem’s Old City, Gush Etzion, and other isolated communities). A much larger Jewish displacement followed. Rising hostility, riots, asset seizures, and official policies after the war led 800,000–850,000 Jews to leave or be expelled from Iraq, Egypt, Yemen, Libya, Syria, and elsewhere. The majority went to Israel, where they were granted citizenship and absorbed. Two refugee populations emerged from the same war. One remained registered as refugees for generations. The other was absorbed by the new state that received them. The distances, destinations, and outcomes were not the same as the simplified picture often presented. And the distorted narrative does more harm towards the cause of peace than good.

My family lived through the establishment of the state of Israel and what he calls the “Nakba.” The Holocaust was nothing like the events of the “Nakba” where my grandfather was told to flee by Arab leaders (not Jews) so the Arabs could “defeat the Jews.” He refused, and all the Arab residents who stayed were given citizenship. Those who fled, a large number by choice, were not permitted to return, as often happens in war. That is a catastrophe, a “nakba” of their own making. But there was no choice in the Holocaust, there was no citizenship for those who stayed. You are intentionally comparing a war and a genocide. They are not the same. Your vile attempt to co-opt the largest massacre of the Jewish people in history, the systematic murder of six million people simply because they were Jews, for your own dystopian pro-terror Muslim Brotherhood agenda is despicable.
