Mental illness is not a defense for murder. To be found not guilty, Lindsay Clancy had to be in the grips of psychosis at the time she strangled her three children to the extent that she did not know what she was doing was wrong. There's been little compelling evidence for that other than her inconsistent claims that she heard a voice commanding her only for the 18 minutes it took to kill Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, eight months. The evidence is that she meticulously planned and carried out three purposeful killings, taking the children one by one to the basement, where she lay them facedown, overpowered their struggles, wrapped an exercise band around each little neck and pulled tight until their bodies were lifeless and the blood vessels had popped in their eyes. Then she went upstairs and attempted suicide, leaving the gruesome scene for her husband to find when he returned from the errands she had sent him on. Also, in the middle of the horror she returned a missed call from her husband who was at CVS, understood his question, and calmly approved his purchase of a generic medicine. Despite seeing multiple shrinks and going to hospital three times, she had never been diagnosed with postpartum psychosis, just depression and bipolar disorder (a diagnosis she and her husband apparently rejected). The psychiatric experts who testified gave conflicting evidence about whether she was in postpartum psychosis at the time of the killings (her youngest child was eight months old) but even if she was, psychosis does not automatically qualify her for legal insanity and absolve her of criminal responsibility. All murderers are mentally ill to some degree.
