Last week in Syria, I witnessed the opportunities and challenges facing the Syrian government and populace. The economy is sputtering along, due to decades of sanctions, corruption, and war. But. overall, leaders in Damascus are creating an investment-friendly economy. Though it will take a few years for people across Syria to reap the full benefits, improved roads, airports, and electricity distribution projects are underway. In Damascus, I met people whose electric bills are higher than rent. In Hasakah, I met businessmen whose thin profits tanked overnight due to the spike in diesel prices. The Syrian government must use its international charm to atttact goodwill cash infusions (without crippling debt) to stimulate/subsidize its people. Ms. Jihan Hessam is the city manager (mayor) for Qamişlo. Her city in northeastern Syria has appx. 1 million pop. and is a hub for commerce and culture. She is the first-ever female city manager in the new Syrian government. We discussed her plans to improve the health, safety, social cohesion and pride among the city’s multicultural, multireligious denizens. Congressman Hamadeh spoke by phone with Mazloum Abdi and Ilham Ahmed and congratulated them on their peaceful integration into Syria’s new government. He thanked them as America’s partners in the fight against ISIS, now filling key roles in Damascus and helping build a Syria that reflects its dynamic mosaic.
