Hey Kit, found your contact on AIS-catcher, couldn't track down an email so trying this! I'm building docktalk.app and would love to send you a full kit if you'd be willing to host a node? Seems like you have all the knowledge already on the AIS side and this is same set up. If you're interested there is a form at the very bottom of the website. If not, now worries and thanks

And if it breaks, just buy a new one every year for a decade and you’ll break even

Very fun very addicting … using cursor! That’s where fable and opus 5.5 come in

So Fable and Opus 5.5 doing heavy lifting to build it …. Using RunPods and running open weight models like whisper for transcription and Qwen for features like “Learn More” that takes the audio and explains it to you - can run these unlimited times and have fixed server costs only Also send the ranking decisions to Z(.)ai api for the more important decisions like what lands on the home page Steep learning curve but learning a ton - at beginning I sent everything to OpenAI got up to 180 a day in just ai costs 😐

PS. How insane is it that we live in a time where you can have an idea and literally build the entire thing on your own without knowing how to code? Easily the best time to be alive

I pay for the node and ship it to you ready to go - it draws as much power as a nightlight. All hosts get immediate access to the app in TestFlight, and lifetime access for free once I go live! Multiple nodes per port is best - better coverage. Get added to the map!

Right now the app is on TestFlight, but I'm hoping to get it live in the App Store soon! Everything is working well - I just need more locations. If you live in a coastal town and would be willing to host a node, reach-out. docktalk.app/#apply

I kept improving the hardware setup until audio was coming through "clean" and reliably...then I started shipping these kits across the country. I currently have 8 active nodes from Portland Oregon, to Buzzards Bay, MA. New York and Washington are coming online in a few days.

Solution: A raspberry Pi + RTL-SDR node that demods all 16 marine VHF channels at once and feeds an AI that finds all the interesting stories. I got my first prototype up and working. That very first day it captured a sinking boat! I was hooked.

The first problem to solve: getting audio from the ocean. Boaters use ~16+ different VHF channels out on the water. Conversations start on one channel, then move to the next. I needed to capture all these channels in parallel per port, 24/7. Then stitch them together. But how?

How wild would it be if you could open an app to see and HEAR the most interesting stories from the water that day? Boats crashing, planes in the water, bridges catching fire, swimmers in distress, a fisherman catching a 700 pound tuna (all real moments we captured!)

Saw this tweet from Jason a little less than 2 months ago. Downloaded the ATC app ... incredible. Immediately thought "I wish this existed for the ocean". I've spent every single day since building DockTalk.
The ATC app is one of the best products I've seen in a while. Lovely UI, novel displays, replays, the matching of visual flight tracking with ATC chatter, following a flight and getting ATC / pilot chatter in a chat-like UI, etc. Super, super well done. apps.apple.com/us/app/atc-li…
