Multnomah County’s rent-assistance programs can serve citizens and non-citizens, but I can’t find any public breakdown showing how much assistance goes to each group. If the County chooses not to collect citizenship status, taxpayers are left unable to answer a basic question about how public money is being distributed. 🚨Portland: Catherine Elizabeth Esperanza, 30, was found guilty Tuesday in Multnomah County Circuit Court of misdemeanor interfering with a police officer. A six-person jury deliberated more than two hours before convicting her for grabbing and refusing to release another protester as Portland police tried to arrest him during the May 1 demonstration outside the ICE building in South Portland. Prosecutors said Esperanza was at the front of a “human chain” of protesters who tried to pull the person away from officers. Body-cam video showed her hands on the arrestee even after an officer removed them once. Esperanza, a post-doctoral fellow with no prior criminal record, claimed she was trying to steady herself after falling while protecting a recently broken leg, was wearing earplugs due to hearing issues, and didn’t hear orders to back off. Judge Celia Howes sentenced her to 18 months of probation, 40 hours of community service, and ordered her to stay away from the immediate vicinity of the ICE facility. The judge declined the prosecution’s request for 10 days in jail, noting the two days she already served after her May 1 arrest were sufficient. Esperanza is one of dozens of protesters charged in Multnomah County this year in connection with demonstrations.
