🚨 NEW: Andy Burnham responds to backlash over potentially scrapping the football stand drinking ban "People can carry drinks into football stadiums now. They don't throw them at the pitch or each other. People are commenting who don't normally go to matches"

Burnham told ITV Granada as part of his pre-conference interviews: "I believe very strongly that we should let this be a matter for clubs and supporters to decide. You don't have a law that just has that blanket discrimination. Let clubs come up with arrangements. That doesn't mean that you have drinking in the stands available across the whole stadium. You might have some areas where it is... I don't see why at the Hill Dickenson Stadium, someone watching rugby league that can stand there with a pint, whereas someone who's an Everton season ticket holder can't. I personally don't think that's right. And also I don't agree with those who say it be like a box park. Well it isn't. People can carry drinks into football stadiums now. They don't just throw them at the pitch or each other. So I'm afraid, that's suggest to me that people are commenting who don't normally go to matches. And these are just my personal views"

It’s completely the other way round, people commenting against it are the ones who actually go the game

Don’t know who he’s been speaking to, majority of critics are match going fans

Not one person inside anfield wants that. Keep them on the concourse, nobody wants to go home stinking of stale ale. He’s a gimp this PM. Bad.

Who does Andy Burnham discuss these matters with? A brick wall?

You can have drinks at half time so the most you need to go without alcohol is 45 mins. If you can’t last 45 mins without a drink you belong in rehab.

The country is going down the toilet and our Andy talks about drinking at football matches. Such powerful decisions are going to change the world 😳

“People are commenting who don't normally go to matches” ? Mate, we all go to matches and most people don’t want this silly idea. Just admit you’re wrong on this one and move on.

"People are commenting who don't normally go to matches" The arrogance of @andyburnham! The only people I have seen commenting on it ARE the people who go to games.

I completely agree. The idea that football fans are somehow incapable of drinking beer in a stadium is actually nuts.

“People are commenting who don't normally go to matches" - Fuck off @andyburnham - I’ve had a season ticket for as long as you’ve been on the planet.

Thought he was supposed to be ‘listening’. Sounds like he thinks he’s right and everyone else is wrong.

I go to matches and don't want to get a beer shampoo every week when a goal goes in.

No l’m a season ticket holder who goes home and away for my club, every fan I know doesn’t want this. Utterly out of touch.

As a season ticket holder of a certain age the last thing I want is a constant bar/toilet exodus throughout the game. Pre match and half time drinks are just fine. If you can’t last 45 minutes without a refill you’re not really bothered about the match. No Burnham just no…!

Many of us stopped going to live matches in the days when the consumption of alcohol led directly to violence on the terraces and after matches between opposing supporters.

I've been going to Everton and other grounds for over 70 years. Does that qualify me to comment on what I see as a retrograde step and seeing a man desperate for a distraction away from his failures in domestic policies so far. Cheap tricks always get exposed.

He really has no clue, does he. He’s so detached from football fans. We don’t all sit in executive boxes wearing scarves we bought on the day of the match, drinking pints bought by a sponsor. We go to matches week in week out and sit in the stands with all of the other real fans.

On the contrary, we do go, and unlike him we don't watch in the posh section with personal security nearby. He should listen to real fans, some are for, some against, but his characterisation of the opposition is as false as his I'm a regular northern guy personna

@andyburnham is a confused man. “The law says fans cannot drink whilst seated “ Football fans do not want a change . But clearly Burnham ‘s best mates in the VIP boxes will love the policy change . PS has Burnham tested this with pub landlords close to stadia ?

He's simply wrong. We had a serious hooligan problem back in the 80's, that's why this ban came into place. If you see some of the riffraff which attend these games, you'll understand exactly why the ban is still so necessary.

I’ve been going to football for nearly 60 years and our star struck PM is wrong on this issue. Would have thought there were more important matters for him to be sorting out really.

I go to dozens of matches every season, and there are definitely idiots there who will spoil it for the rest. Especially when you are stuck with the same season ticket holders every match. You don’t tend to find them in Andy’s prawn sandwich corporate boxes.

Burnham appears in a minority and on the wrong side of the argument. BUT this is totally trivial compared to all the other serious politic events happening. When will political journalists ignore these deflection tactics and start asking him some serious questions. x.com/YouGov/status/21031491…
Most football matchgoers believe the ban on drinking in football stadiums should remain in place, as Andy Burnham suggests a change in the law could be trialled All who've attended a game Ban should remain: 64% Ban should be abolished: 26%

I literally go to 95% of Swansea home games. Most fans commenting against this are season ticket holders. When was the last time he was in a proper stand and not in hospitality? How about sticking to more important matters, Andy?

I go to the match and I do not want the rules changed. Also, you cannot take cans of anything, beer, soft drink or water into Anfield. I imagine it’s the same elsewhere

How about fighting against the discrimination of having to pay one of highest energy bills in the entire European continent? I'd rather have him tackling that first before pints in the stands.

I’ve been watching Plymouth Argyle for 30 years and am completely against scrapping the drinking ban as are most I know. It’s fine the way it is. The people who want to end this are the day trippers that rarely attend matches. He’s doing this solely to try and gain popularity

@andyburnham I have a season card at Manchester City- I don’t want this nonsense implemented!! I’ve witnessed at Champions League matches plastic cups of ‘liquid’ thrown by away fans. I would stop going as I would feel not feel safe at all
