Dallas PD’s Office of Media Relations & Community Affairs welcomed the inaugural Youth Police Advisory Council this morning. Students from Dallas-area high schools will meet throughout the school year with law enforcement leaders, community mentors, and city partners. YPAC’s mission is to create a respectful space to discuss issues affecting young people and help shape constructive approaches to community safety. City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert and Police Chief Daniel Comeaux spoke with the students and their parents, expressing the importance of young people getting engaged with their community. Today’s discussion included a conversation on mental health, in recognition of Suicide Prevention Month. Members of the RIGHT Care program, which helps individuals in crisis, talked about their mission and the importance of a healthy mindset. The group visited Daniel’s Garden, a community garden established in honor of Daniel McKinnon, the son of a Mountain View College professor who died by suicide. Professor McKinnon shared Daniel’s story and how their family is honoring his memory by helping others. Future YPAC meetings will cover public safety, violence prevention, and career readiness. Students will get hands-on experiences, interactive demonstrations from specialized police units, and complete community service projects.

The uniform doesn’t make someone immune to what they see, experience, and carry home. Law enforcement personnel routinely step into situations most people will never encounter. The call may end and the shift may be over, but sometimes the weight of those experiences remains. I am saddened to hear of Jim Ukrop’s passing. As a businessman, philanthropist and civic leader, there was no bigger booster for the City of Richmond. Jim’s passion for closing the racial divides in the former Capital of the Confederacy knew no limits. A self-described “dot connector,” he loved identifying young talent and connecting them to people who could help them reach their full potential. I am honored to be one of the dots he helped connect over the years, and to have called him a friend. Godspeed, Jim.

Hilda Taylor came to the United States from her native Sierra Leone to further her education. She lived in Forestville, Maryland, with two of her three adult children and a grandson. Taylor taught sixth grade at Leckie Elementary School. On 9/11, she boarded Flight 77 with one of her students, Bernard Brown, bound for California on a National Geographic Society field trip. That was said to me by one of my mentors shortly before he passed away. And I will never forget how subtle yet powerful that statement was. I started doing it with Minka back when we had that odd thing called COVID locked up in our house a couple years back. Can you even believe that happened? 🤷🏾‍♂️🤦🏾 @minkajaggerjohn was about five. We danced our way through it. She has grown so much since then. But we're still dancing. As we all struggle to find work life balance.
