For 25 years, the Roadless Rule has protected 45 million acres of the National Forest System across the country. This includes nearly 394,000 acres in Virginia — more than any other state east of the Mississippi River.
Now, the Trump Administration wants to repeal the Roadless Rule and open these lands to road construction, logging and other industrial activity.
I led @MarkWarner, @SenTimKaine, @BobbyScott, @RepDonBeyer, @RepVindman, @RepSuhas and @Rep_Walkinshaw in strong opposition to this proposal because of the potentially devastating impacts this could have on water quality, biodiversity, economic development and more for these regions.

ICYMI: last week, the House passed the Water Resources Development Act of 2026 to authorize water resource studies and construction projects and assist with flood control, navigation, ecosystem restoration and more.
The bill included three initiatives I requested: a feasibility study to better manage flood control for the James and Appomattox Rivers, increased funding for the Chesapeake Bay Oyster Recovery Program, and $25,000,000 to improve water infrastructure for Henrico County!
415-9: House passed legislation authorizing new water projects for construction by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and feasibility studies for future projects. The biennal Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) now heads to the Senate.

Republicans failed to repeal the Affordable Care Act because it’s popular. Instead, they have tried to inflict death by a thousand cuts through as many schemes as they can to undermine it.

Progress was not easily handed over, but won through the blood, sweat and tears of activists across the country.
From Irene Morgan refusing to surrender her Greyhound bus seat in 1944 leading to SCOTUS overturning laws racially segregating interstate commercial buses in Morgan v. Virginia.
To Bruce Boynton’s request for service in the “whites-only” section of a Trailways bus terminal restaurant extending that ruling to terminal facilities in Boynton v. Virginia.
To the Freedom Riders facing a violent backlash across the Deep South leading to the Interstate Commerce Commission finally banning racial discrimination and segregation in interstate transportation and terminal facilities on this day 65 years ago.
To the Civil Rights Act and beyond, we owe a debt of gratitude to the civil rights activists who demanded the promise of “liberty and justice for all” mean all.
We can repay that debt by fighting to ensure the progress they gained does not slip away.

When hospitals close their labor and delivery units, pregnant patients are forced to travel farther and farther from home to access the care they need. For rural communities, the distance can mean the difference between life and death.
As maternity care deserts grow and the maternal mortality crisis worsens due to federal funding cuts and our country continues to face a maternal mortality crisis, we must ensure that every hospital can provide maternity care. During a Health Care Subcommittee hearing, I discussed how the Rural Obstetrics Readiness Act that I cosponsor will help.
