As a longtime defender of higher education, I find this enormously reassuring.
Nate Silver is predicting our decline.
Things may be looking up after all.
I don't think elite higher ed is going to become irrelevant but it's probably tracking to become ~50% less relevant in the new steady state, and that's probably a good recalibration.

Professors do not influence their students' politics.
New data from 33 major universities finds that students become more liberal during colleagues regardless of the ideology of their professors--they find no effect of faculty partisanship on student partisanship.
Instead, liberal students opt into majors with more liberal topics (and conservative students students opt into majors with more conservative topics).
If, anything the study finds a small backlash effect to Democratic faculty (with a slightly higher chance of the student becoming a Republican). It also finds that Democratic profs don’t include more liberal topics or textbooks in their courses.
This research debunks a lot of rhetoric about how faculty impact their students, and instead reveals the power of situation selection--students opt into majors that align with their beliefs.

🇵🇸🗞️ The University of Minnesota will pay Israeli-American Holocaust and genocide scholar Raz Segal $250,000 after withdrawing an offer to lead its Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies following backlash over his description of Israel’s assault on Gaza as “a textbook case of genocide,” the Guardian reports.
🔸 Segal had been recommended nearly unanimously by the academic search committee. The Center for Constitutional Rights argued the public university violated his First Amendment rights by retaliating against protected speech.
🔸 Emails obtained by Segal show donors, legislators and pro-Israel activists pressured the university, including warnings that donations could be withdrawn.
🔸 The settlement includes no admission of wrongdoing. The director position remains unfilled.
