Broadcasters that are running hoaxes and news distortions - also known as the fake news - have a chance now to correct course before their license renewals come up.
The law is clear. Broadcasters must operate in the public interest, and they will lose their licenses if they do not.
And frankly, changing course is in their own business interests since trust in legacy media has now fallen to an all time low of just 9% and are ratings disasters.
The American people have subsidized broadcasters to the tune of billions of dollars by providing free access to the nation’s airwaves.
It is very important to bring trust back into media, which has earned itself the label of fake news.
When a political candidate is able to win a landslide election victory after in the face of hoaxes and distortions, there is something very wrong. It means the public has lost faith and confidence in the media. And we can’t allow that to happen.

Former Syracuse quarterback Rex Culpepper died over the weekend from injuries that he suffered in a Georgia dirt bike accident. He was 28.
Culpepper’s fiancée, Savanna Morgan, confirmed the passing in a heartbreaking post on Instagram on Monday, less than a month after the couple shared the news of their engagement on social media, with photos of Culpepper dropping down to one knee and Morgan showing off the ring.

NEW: The 20-year-old Florida woman who gave birth at home before she allegedly let the child die in her toilet has been released from jail.
NEW: Florida woman gave birth in a toilet and watched her newborn drown before attending a theater performance.
College student Anne Mae Demegillo is accused of throwing her child's body in a duffel bag before going about her normal routine.
Demegillo allegedly admitted to police that she watched as her newborn daughter squirmed and cried until she died.
The 20-year-old student led police to where she buried the baby. The baby was buried in a small grave, three to five inches deep in dirt.
"I watched some of the interview, and I didn’t see any remorse... for someone to stand and watch this, that’s tough," said Chief Deputy Joe Barile.
Barile says the woman is not remorseful for the horrific act.
The baby girl was 3 pounds and six ounces and over 18 inches long.
Pure evil.
