Americans don’t really know what true poverty is, even the poor here are far better off than the poor in a lot of other countries. Capitalism is by far the best economic system without question and has raised the standards of living for everyone.

No one lives in poverty in the US. When welfare is included as income the number living in poverty hits a statistical floor about 1%. These are inmates, institutionals, people changing classification, etc. The amount spent is 10x the actual income deficit. Fraud is ridiculous.

Worth checking which measure a headline uses. Census publishes two: the official rate counts pre-tax cash income only, while the Supplemental Poverty Measure adds tax credits and in-kind benefits, then subtracts medical and work costs. The two can move in opposite directions.
