Yet when baby elephants are forcibly separated from their mothers and families and sent to temples, the trauma does not end with the journey. Imagine a baby being taken away from her mother and then spending a lifetime in an environment where she may face chains, confinement, isolation, forced routines and human control. 💔 A temple does not automatically make captivity compassionate. 🙏 A religious institution must never become a justification for lifelong animal suffering. ❌ A baby elephant is not a religious object. ❌ She is not a temple possession. ❌ She is not an entertainment prop. ❌ Her mother–calf bond is not ours to break for human interests. Mother’s love belongs to no species. If separating a human baby from her mother is recognised as cruelty, why should the same bond be treated as meaningless when the mother and child are elephants? In several cases, such elephants, tied and tortured ruthlessly, die. Others live a miserable life or die of tuberculosis, septicemia, infections, foot-and-mouth diseases and other medical reasons including digestive issues caused by impaction. What is important is that we are still engaged in a feudal obsession with the pachyderm and we cannot give up the Rs 200-crore economy that revolves around them. The animal, whose capture and transfer of ownership is regulated in the country, fetches a jackpot during festivals. Reports say that elephants are leased for 99 years at a cost of Rs 1 crore. Depending upon the 'value,' judged on the grandeur of the animal, he could fetch anything between a few thousands to lakhs for a single day's work.
