Neurotypicals refuse to understand that IT HURTS I don't "dislike" loud noises, THEY HURT I don't "dislike" bright lights, THEY HURT I don't "dislike" when people ask open-ended questions when I'm overwhelmed, IT FUCKING HURTS !!! They never believe me. They refuse to open their minds to things they cannot experience themselves. It's always "how can asking a complex question when you're overwhelmed cause genuine pain" and I DON'T KNOW. MAYBE IF RESEARCHERS LISTENED TO AUTISTIC PEOPLE WITH THE GOAL OF UNDERSTANDING RATHER THAN "CURING" US THEN I WOULD HAVE AN ANSWER FOR YOU

Same. Feels like screaming into a void sometimes. You’re believed here though 💙

Sensory pain isn’t “playing victim.” It’s your nervous system screaming while the world keeps turning the volume up and telling you to toughen up.

Appreciate you getting it 🙏 Having people who actually believe you makes such a difference. Dislike vs HURTS is a whole different experience Thank you for listening instead of questioning it 💜

dislike vs HURTS is exactly it. People think we're being dramatic when it's literally sensory pain. We need more of this, believing first, then trying to understandThis hits hard. The I don't dislike it, IT HURTS part is so real. People frame it as preference when it's actually pain. And the open-ended questions when overwhelmed... brain just bluescreens 😮‍💨 Thanks for putting words to it.

Yeah, there's a reason I'm squinting in the sun even with sunglasses on. IT REALLY HURTS AND I'M STRUGGLING TO SEE. I flinch at loud noises and voices because you might as well have just whacked me over the head with a frying pan. It physically hurt in my earhole. What no get??

Loud, high pitched noises both hurt and cause me distress. If your child is screeching in public and you see me wince, don't glare at me. Shut your child up.

Likewise, neurotypical brains do not work the same way. They have never experienced the kind of HURT that you describe and therefore they struggle or are unable to comprehend what you are describing.

It really concerns me that people are incapable of ... just TRYING ... to understand. It also doesn't help that we have too many people using neurodivergence as an excuse without getting themselves diagnozed or BAR MINIMUM showing ANY symptomps.

Do you feel physical pain or is it emotional distress? I ask because I have the same issues but those things don't literally physically hurt. They just feel very bad, in a "heart is pounding and stomach is sinking" way.

Physical pain is so real. Like holy crap, people don’t understand. They think I’m being dramatic when I say it hurts, but it does! It makes no sense but it is physically painful.

But only if you’re definition of “neurotypical” is not having “hypersensitivity” - your nervous system could still diverge in a lot of other ways (for example hyposensitivity to said stimuli), hence alot of “neurodivergent” people won’t understand it either - basically you say that people who don’t share this level of sensory hypersensitivity that you have, show trouble understanding it since they don’t experience it.

it's not lack of belief it's that strangers don't give a fuck. figure out your life, go live in a dark room enabled by your family that's ruined their lives, sacrificed their happiness, opportunities and growth by coddling you while you tweet about how awful they are

I understand, but I'm not autistic so they refuse to believe me. Their minds are already set because they assume every NT thinks/feels/acts the same. They need to open their minds, too.

Does it really not hurt their brain? Like to the point you need to hit your head or your laying on the floor in extreme pain? Same for some smells?

The people is neurotypicals--and people at large, quite frankly--lack the required intelligence and empathy to comprehend something they either can't physically see or personally experienced.

I get migraines from overexposure to bright lights, florescent especially, so I just tell them that, and most of them are like, okay. You gotta think that they can't always change things, but there are ways you can prevent it

Especially when your experience holds many truths that seemingly contradict themselves lol like yes I understand it goes against what I said but it's still true from that perspective. People act like that's crazy 😅😂
