Since then, grocery prices, electricity, natural gas, hospital services, rent, and other everyday costs have all risen. Electricity is up roughly 10.6%, natural gas 9.3%, hospital services 8.9%, groceries 3.4%, and overall consumer prices about 5.1% from January 2025 through the latest available CPI data. Trump also promised Americans a $2,000 tariff dividend. That payment never materialized. Now, ahead of the midterms, he is promising every American adult $5,000 if Republicans keep control of the House and Senate—a proposal Reuters reports would cost more than $1 trillion. The record is there for everyone to see: higher household costs, an unfulfilled $2,000 promise, and now a new $5,000 promise tied to the outcome of an election. Voters can decide for themselves what that record says about credibility.
