AI industry leaders are calling for frontier AI development to slow down and for more safety oversight, as current trajectories pose serious risks. Congress needs to start acting on this.
TW’s Director of Technology Policy, Ruth Whittaker, and Deputy Director for Electricity, Francesca Hsie, have our view on the AI regulation situation at hand:
1️⃣ Lawmakers must address the larger questions about AI safety and development. Voters are demanding guardrails.
2️⃣ The bipartisan Ratepayer Protection Act is an important step in regulating AI, but not the only step.
3️⃣ Congress needs to require greater transparency around data center energy and water demands, and their effects on host communities.
4️⃣ And we need a national safety framework.
