We have so little time to stop weapons moving beyond human control.
During our coverage of #UNGA81 this week in New York, I sat on "Diplomatic Avenue" show, I had a deep dive with UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Mr. Tom Fletcher @UNReliefChief @UNOCHA on the worsening Humanitarian Situation in Yemen and Sudan.
USG Fletcher told me about his hopes for this week:
" What we're trying to do Talal this week is to reach 11 million people who are currently in the highest severity areas, what we call (category) four and five who we can't get to because of the conflict lines, because of a lack of energetic diplomacy, and so we'll be pushing the world leaders and I will have a list of requests for them"
On Yemen I asked him, will the UN declare famine in Yemen soon, are we on the brink of doing so? He answered:
" What's clear already is that we have millions of people in food insecurity and very sadly moving up through those categories towards famine and I fear we will see these pockets of famine expanding"
On Sudan he said with determination:
" We need access, we need funding and then we need political support to end the conflict because ultimately until the war ends and the guns fall silent you know all we're doing is responding to the consequences of that conflict, of that crisis"
And. about his message to the General Assembly this week USG Fletcher said:
" One of the things I'm saying for this General Assembly is we face these huge threats as humanity and we are losing control of weapons right now and this week the leaders of the world have to take back control of these issues"
