(1/2) Belleville Police Announce Attack Against Sons of Jacob Synagogue as Hate Crime Targeting the Jewish Community Today, authorities confirmed that the attack against Belleville’s Sons of Jacob Synagogue was a hate crime targeting the Jewish community. In response, Noah Shack, @nshack CEO of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, issued the following statement: If not for the extraordinary bravery of Constable Jeff Smith, Canadians would have experienced the type of mass-casualty terror attack our security services have warned is a realistic possibility. We continue to pray for his full and speedy recovery. Today, Belleville Police released the name of a second officer that deserves our unending thanks. Constable Michael McCurdy quickly responded to shooting attack and saved countless lives. Constable Smith and Constable McCurdy’s heroism represent the very best of Canada. Their courage must now serve as a rallying call to elected officials at every level of government and to Canadians across the country to confront this growing threat to our national security and way of life. Police confirmed that this was a deliberate attack targeting members of the Jewish community and released video footage of the attacker stating, “You’re going to die for the Jews,” before the shooting began. Federal threat assessments have warned that “over the longer term, an environment in which the targeting of the Jewish community as a group frequently occurs and becomes more normalized will likely influence some susceptible individuals towards violent extremist pathways.” Extremists, like the gunman in Belleville, are being radicalized by conspiracy theories and libels about Jews to target Canadians.

WJC President @lauder_ronald also remarked the reopening of Vienna's historic Stadttempel synagogue this month, in time for its 200th anniversary.

As president of the @Europarl_EN, @EP_President Roberta Metsola has demonstrated continued commitment to supporting Jewish life in Europe, to combating antisemitism, and to Holocaust remembrance. WJC President @lauder_ronald thanked her personally for this difficult task of resisting the politicization of antisemitism that is happening today.

WJC President @lauder_ronald stressed the crisis of antisemitism, the need for education, and raised serious concerns about the rise of political extremism in Europe and how it can affect Jewish communities. Over the past five years, the EU has built an unprecedented policy architecture to guard against antisemitism. Now we need ensure it is implemented to the fullest so that Jews can live openly and safely. The European Commission is our greatest ally in this mission.

🇱🇻 Foreign Minister Baiba Braže met with representatives of the American Jewish Committee and other Jewish organizations to discuss the Middle East peace process, russia’s war against Ukraine 🇺🇦, antisemitism, and disinformation. The discussion highlighted the need to counter hate speech and disinformation that fuel division and polarization. AJC representatives thanked Latvia 🇱🇻 for its support for Israel’s security and efforts to combat antisemitism.

In the days around Yom Kippur, multiple synagogues - and its Jewish congregants - were targeted with antisemitic violence. In Canada, in Germany. The different authorities foiled additional plans for attacks on synagogues. Sukkot is coming up in just a few days, and this threat and anxiety persist. Jews should be free to mark their Judaism openly without the threat of violence. It is the responsibility of their government to ensure that.

Bundespräsident @vanderbellen ist ein Freund Israels und der jüdischen Gemeinde aufrichtig verbunden. Umso schwerer wiegt, was er gestern in New York gesagt hat: Er sprach von Kriegsverbrechen und wies die Verantwortung einer Seite zu – Israel. Das ist Parteinahme. Kein Wort fand er zur existenziellen Bedrohung durch palästinensische Terrororganisationen sowie das iranische Regime und seine Stellvertreter. Von den Angriffen auf Israelis und vom erklärten Ziel, die Juden auszulöschen, sprach er nicht. Diplomatie heißt, einen Konflikt ganz zu sehen. Wenn ein Staatsoberhaupt einseitige Anschuldigungen als Tatsachen präsentiert, dann legitimiert er jene, die ohnehin "wussten", wer schuld ist. Wir erleben seit dem 7. Oktober 2023 einen Tsunami antisemitischer Vorfälle. Von den 1.532 Vorfällen, die die @AMeldestelle 2025 dokumentiert hat, hatten mehr als drei Viertel einen Israelbezug. Es ist mittlerweile die häufigste Erscheinungsform des Antisemitismus in Österreich. Kritik an Politik ist immer erlaubt, auch israelischer. Aber einseitige Schuldzuweisungen für schwere Verbrechen verkennen die Komplexität im Nahen Osten und machen Lösungen schwerer.
