ICYMI: Paul Godfrey alleged Premier Ford's office exerted "political leverage" over his son's company by promising it government funding while also seeking a favour from Postmedia, which the elder Godfrey used to run. Godfrey's full sworn declaration is here & @Thetrilliumca.
NEW: Postmedia's ex-CEO alleged Premier Ford's then-top staffer used "leverage" over his son's company by promising funding to it, coupled with a favour — helping get the newspaper chain to run a letter from Ford to voters on the eve of the 2025 election. thetrillium.ca/news/politics…

We're publishing our most detailed threat intelligence report to date. It covers how people tried to misuse Claude—for cyberattacks, influence operations, surveillance, biology, and building weapons—and how we found and stopped them. We disrupted every operation in the report, and used the lessons from them to strengthen our safeguards. Where appropriate, we also shared what we found with authorities and other AI companies. These cases are not typical: we’re highlighting some of the most sophisticated misuse we’ve seen. But they’re especially important to discuss, because they show us where AI misuse is headed, where our safeguards work, and where they need to improve. We’re publishing this report so others can spot the same activity on their own platforms, and so we can give the public a clearer view of how emerging threats develop. Free, independent, and pluralistic media are foundational to a healthy, transparent democracy. This disdain for journalism is, at its core, a disdain for democracy.

I was given my name by the Iroquois Nation many hundreds of years ago. By 1660 my name was printed on maps by the Europeans as they accepted the Native name which means Beautiful waters. In 1867 the Canadian government decided to use my name for their providence.

The name Lake Ontario comes from the Wendat word Ontari’io, which, appropriately, means “the lake is beautiful, the lake is big”. The name is more than 400 years old, predating both the Confederation of Canada and the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America. We know that America is changing. Their trading relationships, their foreign policies, their national monuments, their hydronyms. Canadians also know that naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario – then, now and always.

François-Philippe Champagne: "When the United States of America asked too much and offered too little, we made a choice. We chose Canada. We have a red line on the fact that we are a bilingual country and that French is a founding language in this country. That is a red line. And we have a red line around competitiveness of our manufacturing sectors."

For over a year, Canada has worked intensively and in good faith with the United States to negotiate a new comprehensive trade deal. We have been pragmatic, patient, and persistent. Our goal has always been to get the best deal for Canadians, never a deal at any price or on any time frame.   Late last evening I instructed our negotiators to return to Ottawa. We cannot accept what the U.S. has offered, and we will not give what they have asked.    Canada will match the U.S.’ new tariffs dollar for dollar in order to protect Canadian workers, farmers, families, and businesses. We take this step confident that it is in the best interests of Canada.    In the coming days, we will release the details of these new tariff measures, which will come into force the Tuesday after Labour Day.
