PRESS RELEASE DC Police Union Questions Legitimacy of Flock Cameras, States MPD Still Has Not Built the Guardrails. September 10, 2026 Contact: Gregg Pemberton, President WASHINGTON, D.C. – The DC Police Union said today that Metropolitan Police Department license-plate reader and Flock systems might be legitimate investigative tools when they are used under a lawful standard; however, the Department has failed to negotiate, establish, and enforce the controls required for a system this powerful. Gregg Pemberton, President of the DC Police Union stated, “A system with such broad and extensive capabilities requires not only significant guardrails, but also full transparency with the public. The MPD has provided neither.” In July of 2026, the DC Police Union identified improper use by management of Flock data. The Union responded by immediately filing misconduct complaints and submitting a class grievance demanding that the violations stop. Management responded by denying the grievance and refusing to investigate managers who were alleged to be violating the system. The same day the grievance was denied, the Department issued a new teletype restricting Department-wide access. “For years, thousands of cameras have been operating across this city. The problem is not the camera,” said Pemberton. “The problem is that the full capabilities of this system remain unknown, and the guardrails needed to prevent misuse have not been properly negotiated or implemented by MPD. Public trust cannot be built through secrecy about this technology, and officer trust cannot be built by tightening rules on the rank-and-file while refusing to investigate the officials who abused the system.” The Union’s misconduct complaints remain active. The denied class grievance is proceeding to arbitration. A child and a woman are critically injured and three other people have been seriously injured after a wrong-way head-on crash on Southbound I-270 prior to Democracy Boulevard in Bethesda, Maryland 🚨 A ‘MASS-CASUALTY INCIDENT’ was declared, with five total patients located on scene after a head-on crash involving a wrong way driver. There hasn’t been a single report on this issue from other local media outlets in Washington DC. It’s been five straight days of fights breaking out since DC’s first day of school— sometimes in the middle of the street and with pepper spray having to be deployed by police. Four people have been shot (to include a juvenile) during a probable homicide shooting on the 6200 block of Dix Street NE IN Washington DC 🚨 DC police were called out for the shooting just before 1:45pm this afternoon and arrived to find three adult males and a juvenile male having been shot. One of the adult males has been taken to the hospital in traumatic cardiac arrest. Another adult male victim was flown by US Park Police’s EAGLE 🚁 to a trauma center. The other adult male and juvenile male were taken to the hospital, last reported conscious. Police are looking for a silver Honda Accord, MPD’s FALCON 🚁 assisted with a search. #DCCrime

A woman has been shot in the head and critically wounded during a reported domestic-related shooting on the 8500 block of Myrtle Ave in Bowie, Maryland 🚨 At around 4:15pm, a child had flagged down a neighbor that her mother had been shot by a male suspect. Bowie Police arrived to find a woman with a gunshot wound to the head. She has been taken to the hospital in critical condition. An adult male has been taken into custody, and a gun has been recovered on scene. Bowie Police remain on scene and continue to investigate…

🚨 UPDATE: VEHICLE INVOLVED IN FATAL HIT-AND-RUN RECOVERED BLOCKS FROM SCENE 🚨 WASHINGTON, D.C. — Metropolitan Police have recovered the vehicle believed to be involved in the fatal hit-and-run crash at North Capitol Street and New York Avenue NE. The striking vehicle was located unoccupied several blocks away in the unit block of Hanover Street NW. The crash happened around 6:53 p.m. Sunday, when an adult woman was struck by an occupied vehicle. She was transported to a local hospital unconscious but breathing, but later died from her injuries. Police are still searching for two Black males wearing denim jeans and white shirts. MPD’s Major Crash Investigations Unit is leading the investigation. 🚨 NON-CONTACT SHOOTING UNDER INVESTIGATION; MULTIPLE VEHICLES STRUCK BY GUNFIRE 🚨 GREENBELT, Md. — Police are investigating a non-contact shooting in the 5900 block of Cherrywood Lane. Officers located both pistol and rifle shell casings at the scene, indicating multiple rounds were fired. Several parked vehicles were also struck by gunfire. No injuries have been reported at this time. Police have not released a suspect description or additional details surrounding the shooting.
