What books would you recommend to non-Americans to best understand our electoral politics?

How does one mess up this question? Just say Bratton or Beck and expand on what could be done better. We have a terrible police chief who delegates authority to others and blows through our budget. Bass is deeply unpopular. This race could have been decided by now.
NEW: Who is an example of a police chief that Nithya Raman really respects or admires? "I don't know...I don't know." Raman is now apologizing for her recent debate remarks that LAPD Chief Daryl Gates was a "gold standard" for his handling of immigration. Critics accuse Gates of racist policies. "It was a mistake to reference his name at all. I was trying to make a point and I fumbled that point. That point was not to praise Daryl Gates in any shape or form. I sincerely apologize for mentioning his name. I know it causes real pain for so many people across Los Angeles and I shouldn't have said it." Raman has said she wants to dismiss current LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell but has not floated any names of potential replacements. We'll have a lot more with Raman coming soon on @CNNTheStoryIs

Genuinely don't understand why you think this is about land and not the fact that people live in that land who are being tortured as we speak, and that Russia does not want to negotiate because their goal is the destruction of Ukraine
Ukraine is not WW2, and a high chance that unlike WW2 Ukraine won't get back its land. Outright opposition to a peace deal is bad. You can (and rightfully) argue none of the peace deals have been good but that's a different argument.

Le Pen will be a major problem for EU aid to Ukraine not because she'll end France's bilateral contributions but because she wants to torpedo the next EU budget, which is where the bulk of financing for Ukraine will come from. She also opposes the use of Russia's assets in Euroclear
So, in other words, even if Marine Le Pen comes to power and ends French aid to Ukraine...its marginal

This has been on my list for 2 years guess I have to read it now.
My Irish ancestors were slaves bought and sold by Jewish people. And you expect me to care about antisemitism?
Community note
Irish people sent to the Americas were primarily indentured servants under temporary contracts, not chattel slaves. No historical evidence supports claims they were bought and sold by Jewish people; this relies on the debunked Irish slaves myth. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_sla… snopes.com/fact-check/iri… apnews.com/article/920e1c

I would be still less generous: this presidential administration has never had the ability to distinguish good from evil.
Nobel laureate @avalaina has documented Russian war crimes in Ukraine since its full-scale invasion. Her reaction to Trump saying Russia has been “fine”’ there?: “We document intentional murders of civilians every day…I'm sorry to say, but this presidential administration completely lost their ability to distinguish between good and evil.”

Russia had gained 890 square kilometers as of last month; Ukraine had taken back 800 square kilometers. That means Moscow has taken all of about 34.7 square miles of Ukrainian territory TOTAL in 2026.
BREAKING: President Trump says Russia is showing no signs of slowing down on the battlefield as his special envoy Steve Witkoff prepares to travel to Moscow for talks. "They just keep grinding forward," Trump says, pointing to Russia's territorial gains in Ukraine and its ability to keep sending troops into battle. Still, the president insists Russia wants to reach a deal, even as he describes its military advancing week after week.

This tweet took a lot of momentum out of the news story here. @FedorovMykhailo made it seem like all was good now. But it’s not. He should readdress this issue because as of now, this tweet has done a lot of damage to Ukraine
Starlink connectivity at speeds of up to 160 km/h is being restored. Removing Starshield’s speed limit entirely is now critical for Ukraine’s defense. Thank you, @elonmusk. We hope for your continued support.

Finally, we're done with the tone policing
"American negotiators have been trying to push Ukraine into surrender for already almost two years, one and a half years now. Why Ukraine hasn't surrendered on Putin's terms is because Europe has been supporting Ukraine," High Representative Kaja Kallas said on Tuesday.

This guy crawled out of whatever hole he’s been hiding in to act outraged about critics as though his boss hasn’t been saying and writing nakedly pro-Putin and anti-Ukraine stuff every day for weeks
SECRETARY RUBIO: I saw somebody associated with the Ukrainian government say that people in Ukraine are dying because the U.S. is denying them information. That's scandalous. That's outrageous. That's just simply not true.

.@palmerluckey adds his voice to those accusing Europe of hypocrisy for criticizing US sanctions waiver while buying Russian oil or gas. But surely it's relevant how much EU purchases have fallen (see charts). Irrespective of the merit of EU's continued purchases, it bore a lot of economic pain to get to this point and the marginal pain rises with each additional BTU cut off. Recognizing this, Trump himself has issued waivers to European buyers of Russian energy, most notably last year to Viktor Orban of Hungary. Meanwhile, EU pain was U.S. gain: it became a larger supplier to Europe. Indeed, as a net petroleum exporter, U.S. has benefitted from sanctions. But it has such low tolerance for any hit to consumers it is easing sanctions anyway.
I hate qualifying arguments like this, but - everyone knows I am about as pro-Ukraine/anti-Russian as it gets. That regularly leads to friction between me and other Republicans, even ones who otherwise align 99%. With that said, whining from Europeans and the American left about America buying $1B in diesel fuel from Russia is so out of touch with reality. The EU has spent over $200B on Russian fuel and is on-track to buy hundreds of billions more. Most of that was purchased by wealthy EU members who can absolutely afford alternatives. x.com/PalmerLuckey/status/20…

Just in: South Korea's foreign ministry has announced a partial withdrawal of embassy staff from Ukraine. It cites the absence of "forward-looking measures" from Kyiv and persistent airstrike threats. It did not spell out its demands, but Seoul wants an apology over the POW row.
Breaking: South Korea is recalling its ambassador to Ukraine. The foreign ministry says it expects outstanding issues between the two countries to be resolved amicably, and will continue consultations with Kyiv.
