The fact the most emaciated Jews in Nazi death camps were called ‘Muselmänner’ by prisoners because they were so weak that they could only silently lie on the ground (resembling a praying muslim), is obviously not evidence that there was serious anti-Muslim sentiment in the Holocaust. The SS had multiple divisions comprised of Muslims. Indeed, in ‘If This Is a Man’ Primo Levi clearly explained that ‘Muselmann’ was camp slang for ‘the weak, the inept, those doomed to selection’. It denoted a Jewish prisoner’s condition, it is not at all an illustration that the Nazis regarded Jews as Muslims, or mass murdered Jews under a broad ‘Semitic’ identity that equally encompassed Muslims. You must know that Francesca is engaging in this brazen distortion in order to diminish the fact that specifically anti-Jewish hatred was the driving force behind Nazi ideology. So why are you defending her? Furthermore, her long tirade about the etymology of the term ‘antisemitism’ is factually incorrect from start to finish. This is a matter of linguistic fact, not opinion (I’m a linguist who studied etymology), and can be debunked with a quick Google search. It refers to anti-Jewish hatred alone. Are you shameless enough to defend her on this score too?

This woman is a brazen liar and it’s a damning indictment on the UN that she remains in her position.

The opening of Kamal Amrohi’s Pakeezah (1972) belies the labor behind it. You see a dark red background and hear the ghungroo of a dancer and the beat of a tabla. But you can’t see the face that would make the movie a masterpiece. After all, the director, writer, and producer had envisioned the project as a love letter to his wife, Meena Kumari. When you read it that way, it makes sense. But in every other aspect, the project is bewildering. It took 16 years to make Pakeezah. The plot is nonexistent; there’s scant, often nonsensical, dialogue. Meena Kumari would halt production several times, rumored to have asked her husband for a divorce before she proceeded. She would also get sick, diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver, allegedly caused by excessive drinking. Understandably, much of the film upon its release felt dated. So, of course, when it came out on February 4, 1972,  audiences and critics were dumbfounded, calling it “a lavish waste.” It would take Meena Kumari’s death a few weeks later, at age 38, to pack theaters and make it one of the highest-grossing films of the year. But what would make it immortal, decades later, was something else entirely.
