In occupied Oleshky, Ukrainians are beginning to eat their dogs; according to the city's military administration, the Russians have not allowed food into the city since May. That is standard regulatory practice for deterrence. A fine based only on EU revenue would be a parking ticket for a company whose owner treats sovereign regulators as customer service. What Washington is actually defending is the right of an American oligarch to run a disinformation platform inside a democratic market without consequence. Trump called the fine “foreign extortion. ” The extortion is coming from inside the administration. The EU should not tolerate this. Not because it opposes America. Because tolerating it means accepting that a foreign government can shield its tech monopolies from the laws of every democracy where they operate. That is something else. A permission structure for platform-enabled election interference. And when it happens is important. The administration pushing to control Europe's leadership also boosts far-right groups across the continent. The X case concerns something other than a fine. The question is whether the EU still has the nerve to enforce its own rules when the pressure comes from Washington instead of Moscow. If Brussels folds here, every autocrat learns the same lesson: buy a platform, capture an administration, and democratic regulation becomes optional.

In the early 1800s the Governor of Ohio, Thomas Worthington, built a mansion and estate near Chillicothe, Ohio and named it "Adena," a Hebrew word for “delightful place.” On the estate was a large conical mound nearly 30 feet tall, which Worthington carefully kept intact. Worthington died in 1827 and the family sold a portion of the estate in 1896 to Joseph Froehlich after the death of Worthington’s son's wife. Froehlich was a farmer who wanted the mound flattened, and in 1901 he allowed William Mills of the Ohio Archaeological & Historical Society to excavate (obliterate) the mound. Mills found 35 burials with copper bracelets and other artifacts, freshwater pearls, and thousands of beads. Flint knives and points, stone gorgets, various fabric pieces, and a curious pipe dubbed “Adena Man” were also recovered. There were large tombs in the mound formed from large logs and the Adena Mound became the “type” name for the “Adena Culture.” Later carbon dating of the artifacts showed the mound was made as early as 100 B.C.
