AI will be especially fatal to writing that takes too long to get to the point. Now there will always be a more concise alternative, and 99% of readers will choose it.

What puzzles me is the issue that they used LLMs to do the post-mortem analysis, would that not make it less reliable.

A remarkable article in the Times describes increasingly horrific settler violence in the West Bank, condemned by an array of former Israeli govt officials. The highlighted portions, comparing Jewish settlers to Nazis, are attributable to Netanyahu’s former defense minister

Wait, it’s even easier than I thought. I could build this extension “chatGPT build me widget that 1) types any text I paste and 2) replaces the pasted text with the freshly-typed copy

Just back from a life-alteringly bonkers & joyous time at Beijing's You and Me Festival. A genuinely inspiring free experimental festival. Slippery, bizarre, challenging music met by a large, engaged audience. The 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 delegation (Tom Mudd/Cara Tolmie/Jackson Burton/me) had a blast

Am I getting this right? On big questions, like where does consciousness come from, philosophers and physicists have basically made zero progress? Thanks. Just checking.

There has been plenty of progress on clarifying such questions, read e.g. Thomas Nagels' The View from Nowhere.

After the Jonestown Massacre, in 1978, writers flocked to Guyana to survey the shambles and excavate the stories. After more than 900 members of the Peoples Temple died—at the behest of cult leader Jim Jones, who forced them to drink Fla-Vor-Aid laced with cyanide—journalists wanted to figure out whether Jonestown was a utopian experiment gone astray or a madman’s fever dream destined to fail. Shiva Naipaul was among them. Two weeks after the massacre, he set off for Guyana. When it was published, in 1980, his book about the events, “Journey to Nowhere,” was controversial for its slanted, disillusioned telling. “The vigorous extremes of life interest him and energize his sentences,” Hua Hsu writes. “I only ever knew Jonestown as a story, and Naipaul’s telling was different from the ones I had grown up reading.” Read Hsu’s review of the recently reissued book: newyorker.com/books/second-r…

Immigration is Trump’s top issue, was Joe Biden’s biggest political vulnerability, and it’s the number one motivator of the MAGA movement. Interestingly they have no legislation whatsoever in the works on this. slowboring.com/p/trump-hasnt…

Because immigration being a problem gets them voters. If they were to make it less of a problem, they will lose voters. Same with anti-immigration parties in Europe.

Noah Smith has one of the most popular politics newsletters on Substack, and he published an interesting essay arguing that his influence has diminished over time, partly due to the economic incentives around paid newsletters. Basically, it pushes one to serve their hardcore readership and engage less with the larger outside world. Obviously, this aligns with another argument I’ve seen floating around that, because the premium publishers that produce the best journalism lock it behind a paywall, a smaller and smaller portion of the population is being exposed to high quality news coverage. noahpinion.blog/p/does-anyth…

Some people I think very well of are into the rationalist, EA, LessWrong world of ideas, and, qua philosopher, many of those ideas and approaches strike me as serious and worth considering. But man, qua human, when some of the sociocultural stuff about those communities reaches my boring old academic timeline, and one sees the rat discussions around that sociocultural stuff, the WTF is so powerful it makes me think there is something very off about the worldview when translated into a way of life. Not sure if it is gender skew, age, anti-conservatism about norms, the strange culty insider way of speaking and writing, too much consequentialism and longtermism, money, tech bro culture and power, overvaluation of “rationality” over emotion, or… ? But wow. I know, painting with a broad brush and all that.
