It's hard for people to understand the damage inflation can do. The inflation of 2021–2022 was not a small blip. For lower-income workers it was a massive, lasting hit to their standard of living — one that some may never fully recover from. This chart from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis shows the real purchasing power of the bottom 25% of wage earners. It is constructed by taking their wage growth series, adjusting for CPI, and indexing the result so that January 2021 = 100. What the chart reveals: From mid-2015 through early 2021, real purchasing power for these workers was essentially flat @ 100. There was a brief modest rise just before inflation accelerated. Then the inflation surge hit. Purchasing power fell sharply and continued declining until late 2025. Today it sits roughly 31% below the level that held for most of the 2015–2021 period. That means what they could buy with $100 from 2015-2021 now costs $144. To put the scale of the damage in perspective: even if these workers now sustained continuous real wage growth of 1% per year, it would take about 37 years just to get back to the 2015-2021 baseline. That is the lasting cost of the inflation bubble.
