Shout-out to this headline from the verge I think about it whenever someone asks for a recommendation
It should NOT be this hard to buy a privacy-respecting printer. Seriously. A printer should be one of the simplest devices in the house. You send it a document. It puts ink or toner on paper. That should be the whole relationship. Instead, the mainstream printer market has become a swamp of cloud accounts, mobile apps, subscriptions, cartridge DRM, remote diagnostics, vendor lock-in, and “smart” features nobody asked for. HP is the canonical example of how bad this got. HP+ ties the printer to an HP account, an internet connection, and original HP ink for the life of the device. Dynamic Security can reject cartridges based on vendor-controlled firmware rules. Instant Ink turns printing into a subscription relationship. Why does it need to talk to the vendor just to do the one job it was built for? And from a security perspective, this is a nightmare. A Wi-Fi printer is a computer on your LAN. It has firmware, network services, a web admin panel, default settings, cloud features, and sometimes stored documents or saved credentials. A compromised printer can expose services. It can: - advertise itself to the LAN - store print jobs and scans - keep address books and scan destinations - hold credentials for scan-to-email, scan-to-SMB, scan-to-FTP, LDAP, or remote management And it usually sits on the same network as your laptop, phone, NAS, smart home devices, and sometimes work machine. Used printers are worse. Assume the previous owner left behind Wi-Fi settings, scan destinations, address books, stored credentials, and cached documents. One reason to prefer black-and-white: many color laser printers can embed machine identification codes into printed pages. Yellow dots are the famous version. The broader issue is forensic marking. Good intel on this is weirdly hard to come by.

And you can get cheap ink cartridge refills for it. Yes this is the one I use at work. Don't buy their name brand shit.

Gets used twice a year. Always turns on. A decade of service and it’s still running the original toner cartridge.

as an IT tech i cant stress enough, brother printers really are just that solid. they're not overengineered or have annoying software. you install the printer, install the drivers from the Brother website via your computer's bog standard printer installation, and thats it

I've also spent an unreasonable amount of time trying to debug some HP office printers. "Download our app! Talk to our AI assistant!" It should not be hard to convert a document to a greyscale pixel sequence and say "send this to IP 1.2.3.4 with a header saying 'print this'."

Unfortunately they now enforce DRM cartridges and degrade print quality if you use off-brands.

My dad asked me for a printer recommendation the other day, directed him to this exact one. Inexpensive, works great.

My employer was gonna throw one of these out in ~2018 because it didn't copy or scan and it's my main printer ever since. No drama, no driver issues, one toner replacement.

Srry, but the ET-4810 stays winning. I have not had to refill the colored ink since i bought it about 2 years ago, and have only had to refill the black ink once.

I love sharing this article. I have like a 13 year old brother printer that works great, I've replaced the toner maybe twice. I wanted wifi but felt bad replacing it... So I set up a print server using a pi zero w and it all just works.

Omg. I have this printer and it really is the most dependable. So much better than every @HP printer I have ever bought. HP printers need to constantly be re-installed.

I have a similar one from Canon. Nothing fancy about it. Just a laser printer that takes readily available toner cartridges I can get from a dozen different sellers; all have worked fine. I have printed probably 25k pages off of it and it still works. Everyone who buys into something like the HP ecosystem is a sucker. Just get something dumb and simple and it works for years.

I think I'm on my 3rd, one I was just too interested in pulling it apart, then the next got replaced as I inherited one with the scanner too. It's like this big secret we've all stumbled upon one way or another and now finding an underground society of similar (better) people

Canon PIXMA MG5320….we’ve had ours since around 2013 (originally introduced in 2011) and it works fine! amazon has really cheap reproduction cartridges and this happens to be one of the earlier AirPrint printers, meaning my iPhone 11 on iOS 26 prints no problem!

Brother did try once to force a firmware update that only allowed you to use Brother branded ink but 3rd party vendors immediately got around it and they haven't tried that shit again (so far)
