In 1772, the colonists had no right to trees over 12" thick, not even if it was in their front yard. A law reserved every white pine that size for the Royal Navy's masts. Surveyors roamed New Hampshire slashing a mark into the trees, claiming them for the King of England. The mill owners of Weare ignored the law and cut the trees they wanted to. So the sheriff rode out to arrest them and collect the fines. The Weare men blackened their faces and went after the sheriff in what is now called the Pine Tree Riot. They gave him a lash for every tree he'd charged them for. Then they cropped the ears and tails off his horses and sent him riding out of town through a jeering crowd. Before the Boston Tea Party and the Boston Massacre, a New Hampshire town defied the Crown. And the pine tree symbol remained. When Washington needed a flag for his first warships in 1775, he put a New England pine on it, over the words "An Appeal to Heaven." This turned something that the King used to tyrannize the colonists to support his Navy, into a symbol of a country defying him on their own Navy.

The president noted the importance of Greenland for the telemetry network, missile defense, and for boxing out China and Russia. The threats to Greenland were counterproductive, but moving the diplomacy to professional private channels w/ Rubio achieved Trump’s aims.

Its approach was distinctive: use China’s own scholarship and professional journals to better understand how the PLA thinks, plans, and operates in the military maritime domain. Two decades later, that mission has never been more important. Today, the China Maritime Studies Institute (CMSI) commemorates 20 years as an official Navy program and two decades of research, education, and engagement focused on China’s military maritime development. CMSI traces its origins to a group of Naval War College faculty who recognized the need for a dedicated effort to better understand China’s growing military maritime power. Established within the College in 2004 and formally launched as an official Navy program in 2006, CMSI became the Department of Defense’s first service-level Professional Military Education (PME) China center. Over the past two decades, CMSI has sought to do something that remains central to our mission today: conduct rigorous research on China’s military maritime forces and provide penetrating insights that are relevant to the U.S. Navy, the @DeptofWar, and national security decision-makers. I have always found it puzzling that the US has never properly celebrated the Eagle Squadron of American volunteers who served in the Battle of Britain. A story made for a miniseries. Great thread here⬇️
