Hurricane Lowell is currently about 600 miles south of Lihue, Kauai and could be near major hurricane strength when it moves close to the western Hawaiian Islands late Monday and Monday night. Continue to monitor DisasterAWARE for updates with each advisory, including potential impacts as this event unfolds. Regardless of Lowell's exact track and intensity, there is a risk of storm surge, wind, and rainfall for portions of Hawaii, particularly Kauai County, early next week. Heavy rainfall may produce flash flooding and mudslides, especially in areas of steep terrain. Sending aloha to our partners in Guatemala! PDC was excited to return to Guatemala (NDPBA-2018; pdc.org/NDPBA) as we continue to support SOUTHCOM's DisasterAWARE Integration and EOC Modernization program. Mahalo (thank you) to the Executive Secretariat for the Regional Coordination for the Reduction of Disasters (CONRED) for organizing the training and inviting a diverse and talented group of participants. This engagement marked the second of five scheduled trainings to support DisasterAWARE integration (DisasterAWARE.pdc.org) throughout Central American and the Caribbean. The training focused on local hazards and the application of data layers and risk and vulnerability assessments in planning and response to further strengthen national and local capacity and capabilities for early warning and response operations. Together, we’re strengthening sustainment planning, expanding national and local collaboration, and advancing new partnerships to support early warning and risk assessment. #SaferWorld #EarlyWarningforAll #Guatemala #Training #DisasterAWARE #Preparedness #DisasterPreparedness @ConredGuatemala @insivumehgt @usembassyguate @southcom

Potential Tropical Cyclone One-C is expected to become a tropical storm later today or tonight and strengthen while it moves near or over the Hawaiian Islands late this week and this weekend. It’s still too soon to specify the exact location and magnitude of impacts, so closely monitor and ensure your preparedness plans are in place. Heavy rain is expected to begin to impact the Big Island on Friday, spreading westward into Maui on Saturday, and across Lanai, Molokai, Oahu and Kauai on Sunday. This rainfall may produce life-threatening flooding and mudslides, especially in areas of steep terrain. There is an increasing risk of wind and wave impacts regardless of the exact track and intensity. Hurricane or Tropical Storm Watches may be required for portions of the Hawaiian Islands tonight or early Thursday. Disaster managers and humanitarian assistance professionals can request access to DisasterAWARE Pro (disasteraware.pdc.org). The public can download our free Disaster Alert mobile app for updates and hazard alerts. #disateralert #earlywarningforall #saferworld #hawaii #BigIsland #Maui #Molokai #Lanai #Oahu #Kauai @Hawaii_EMA @Maui_EMA @CivilDefenseHI @Oahu_DEM @hawaiiredcross

Sending aloha to our Colombian partners! The team was excited to return to Cali last week as we continue our two-year project to strengthen early warning and decision support capacity in partnership with the Twilio.org Foundation and Cali's Secretariat for Emergencies and Disaster Risk Management (SGRED). This latest engagement marked the delivery of Phase 2 (of 3) of the Training of Trainers program, expanding PDC's cohort of certified DisasterAWARE instructors through PDC's enhanced training curriculum. The engagement also included DisasterAWARE training for personnel from Universidad del Valle. and integration of DisasterAWARE into emergency procedures, further strengthening local capacity and capabilities for early warning and response. Finally, PDC conducted multiple interviews with local responders to better understand the communication challenges faced by first responders in more remote locations, Together, we’re strengthening sustainment planning, expanding national and local collaboration, and advancing new partnerships to support early warning and risk assessment. We look forward to returning soon to continue building training skills for DisasterAWARE Pro! #earlywarningforall #saferworld #cali #colombia #landslides #landslide #training #preparedness #disasterpreparedness #alert @twilio @riesgocali @alcaldiadecali @univallecol

Sending a big mahalo (thank you) to our partners in Liberia! We were excited to be in-country to begin planning the National Disaster Preparedness Baseline Assessment (NDPBA) in partnership with the Liberian National Disaster Management Agency. NDMA Executive Director, Mr. Ansu V.S. Dulleh, Sr, described the project as critical to Liberian disaster preparedness, as the country expands the comprehensive disaster management capabilities necessary to prepare for, respond to, and recover from hazards. The NDPBA project (pdc.org/NDPBA) is designed to promote risk-informed decision-making through evidence-based data and analytics, increase multi-agency coordination, and enhance disaster monitoring and disaster risk reduction initiatives. We look forward to returning for the official NDPBA Kickoff Workshop in November! #SaferWorld #EarlyWarningforAll #NDPBA #Liberia #DisasterPreparedness #LiberiaNDMA #NDMALiberia #LiberiaNDMA @embassymonrovia @USAfricaCommand
