Queen of not letting it go

A few weeks ago we were discussing mutual expectations of behaviour with the group of kids I volunteer with (age 10-12) and one kid brought this up and we immediately said ”collective punishment violates the Geneva Convention so we won’t be doing that. Thanks for bringing it up.”
As the "good kid" back in school, I hated it when teachers would punish the entire class for the actions of one or two students. It doesn't encourage other students to behave, it makes other students wonder what's the point in following the rules if they'll get punished anyway

Even as a non-religious person, I personally cringe at the hubris required to personally tell the Pope that you think your company has created an ensouled being, thus rendering Anthropic equivalent to God the creator. Further, that you did it for profit and it is now enslaved.

Typ.

I really do not get this. If Schumer does run he will be vulnerable to someone like Chi primary’ing him. There’s no “next man up” for the presidency, AOC is our only shot here, there just isn’t anyone else credible. And even if she loses, she can take out Gillibrand in ‘30!
Abdul’s victory is gonna produce some AOC 2028 hype. But she should still run for Senate.

We really need to distinguish kinds of cyclists. They look similar ("on a bike") but have very, very different behaviors and desires, and these interact with other forms of transportation and density in different ways. - Group A: serious cyclists riding for exercise. These people want to maintain high power output and heart rate. They are riding bikes that cost > $5k (like the one in the photo). They are generally very experienced, comfortable with well-behaved traffic, and move at the speed of vehicles. They do not want to use bike lanes and every stop sign or light is an impediment to their exercise goal. They are generally deferential to pedestrians and work with cars and follow rules, but it's a different set of rules than they would use when driving. Average speed alone is ~18 mph or > 20 mph in groups. - Group B: commuters and explorers. These people just want to get from point A to B safely. They are uncomfortable around cars, and often do not understand them (think children). They benefit immensely from bike lanes and traffic calming, and in fact will often not even ride at all if those don't exist. They will follow traffic laws especially if those rules and the lighting and so on are developed with them in mind. Their average speed is something like 8–10 mph. - Group C: workers. These are couriers and food deliverers who are cycling because it is way cheaper and more versatile than a vehicle. Their goal is to move as fast as possible so as to increase their bottom line. These are the groups that have adopted e-bikes and other electric and small motor vehicles. This group is relatively new and growing and is ungoverned by custom or tradition. Unlike those in Group A, they often ride on sidewalks and at high speeds even in dense pedestrian areas, and, due to the motor assist, are often moving at speeds > 25 or even 30 mph. The law needs to respond to these groups differently. - The unfortunate reality is that the desires and needs of (A) are largely incompatible with a dense city like NYC. - Cities should do everything they can to accommodate and help out (B), especially because the benefits spill over to businesses and also help slow traffic down in ways that are legible to drivers and that don't result in individual resentment. - The law needs to be brought down like a hammer on (C), because they create the most disorder and pose the greatest danger to pedestrians.
Many states have stop sign as yield and stop light as stop sign laws which has been shown to increase cyclist safety. People on bicycles should ALWAYS yield to pedestrians where there is conflict/a tie. Assholes on bikes are less lethal than assholes in cars but not less noxious.

My take on the AOC Bills-hoodie is that it’s either just her being a genuine fan with no ulterior motive, OR she is muddying the waters regarding her 2028 plans.

The establishment is not prepared for the way young people will be lining up to volunteer and vote for her
AOC says about 2 thousand people came to campus.

The problem with "be normal" discourse is that it reads correctly to people that don't need to hear it and the people that actually need to will find ways to be upset by it.
Hasan Piker: “We are the normal ones. It is less normal to constantly fucking freak out about transgender people than it is to just let transgender people live. Most people actually don’t care about trans people existing in society. But on the internet that’s the only thing the Republicans dial in on and they make it seem like being transgender is abnormal. You know what’s abnormal? Constantly fucking worrying about children’s genitals. That is the most weirdo freak shit of all time”

Sorry for an essay on a shitty SNL joke but this clip is the PERFECT encapsulation of how Establishment Democrats view Zohran’s social media success versus what he actually does on here. Zohran’s entire communication style is always clear and effective while simply adapting it to common vertical video production features (good audio, minimal dead air, moving shots). This is especially true when it comes to serious situations like storms, where he focuses on clear recommendations and updates for the viewer. He also incorporates his genuine personality as well into the videos to make them authentic. This clip, on the other hand, is the complete opposite of that. It assumes Zohran is leaning into a ridiculous TikTok dance trend that doesn’t communicate actual practical information to the audience about flood zones or services the city offers during storms. It could not be further from what Zohran actually does on social media. This is just a one-off bad joke but it honestly isn’t too far off for how many people in power view Zohran’s social media presence. And that’s also why they’ve never been able to replicate it.
like what is this??

A goated 2028 candidate (AOC) should launch with the goal of campaigning in all 50 states, because they’re ”running to represent all of America.”

I wouldn't want this tbh. A Senate campaign cannot be thrown together in a day. If AOC was running for president, by March 2028 it is very likely we would already have a different progressive NY Sen candidate that had spent months building a coalition to win.
I keep forgetting AOC can just run for president and if not viable after Super Tuesday drop out and still have time to file for Senate

One thing that turned me against the vision of prison/police abolition was realizing it would be this type of person who would be, in the main, taking their place as administrators of “community justice,” “accountability circles,” and so on. That, in fact, it would be a different flavor of cop, but ultimately would still attract people with many of the same pathologies common among police (desire for domination, power, authority, status; sadism; etc). The methods and culture would be different but, ultimately, still populated by people I simply do not trust with such responsibilities. Given this reality, finding ways to reform or remake the institutions of formal, bureaucratic justice—to empower the institutions and rules and disempower the arbitrary authority of the sort of individual drawn to such work—seemed like a better strategy than simply trading one kind of cop for another. I suppose this is the crux of it; some people see the bureaucracy and the institution as the problem. I don’t. I see the failure of bureaucracy to assert itself above the individual, arbitrary wills of People With Cop Brain as the problem. I want a justice system even more impersonal and rule-bound, one which properly restrains the antisocial and hostile impulses of the people who tend to, given the chance, volunteer for the work of regulating “the community.” The abolitionist vision is one without formal institutions and bureaucracies which can subdue these impulses and this kind of person drawn to the work of policing/regulating/controlling. Therefore, I don’t see it succeeding at much beyond trading one kind of police for another, less constrained, more arbitrary kind of police.
Like this is the most textbook gaslighting I have ever seen in my life, it’s not a politics thing or a woke thing this person is an abuser do not let people like this in your life

The driving lifestyle isn't a choice, it's a government mandate. We don't have housing/transportation policies in the U.S. We have national industrial policy focused on selling cars & oil. Providing habitations & mobility for humans is tertiary at best. mateosfo.substack.com/p/amer…
We have to improve the building code for infill multistory housing. We’ve reached the point where the places people want to live can only grow by pivoting from sprawl to middle-housing density. And you can’t get the quality of life people want until building code accomodates it. -Single stair as a norm -Right-sized elevators -Fed & states putting the ICC and NFPA on short leashes and demanding that code includes a holistic view of impacts. -End of setbacks, other anti-housing development and zoning ordinances designed to force waste and loss of space for people and green space in favor of asphalt and vetocracy.

Can we stop pretending that AOC is the only viable candidate to replace Schumer? There are many progressives who could win that race in New York. Only AOC has the juice for a presidential run. Who else would be the heavyweight progressive/DSA candidate?

The particular specialty of human teenagers is doing stupid shit. Nobody is pretending that they behaved sensibly. Our transportation system should be designed in such a way that ordinary human frailty: youth, age, exhaustion, distraction, anger or grief doesn’t result in death.
I agree that TransAlt would be a more credible actor if its leaders would acknowledge that two teens joyriding on one electric Citibike, obstructing each other's view of even the most basic traffic surroundings, is incredibly unsafe and in this case deadly behavior enabled by reckless adults. But I also get why they don't. To be an activist, you can never ever ever ever give an inch. This is why I would not be a successful activist for anyone or anything.

The original meaning of “parking” meant to plant decorative vignettes along road sides. As cars became popular, motorists started storing their cars on these parklets destroying them. Cars have been enshitifying cities pretty much since they were invented.

new American superblock. One parking garage per block shared by residents who want to pay for parking. Interior streets are pedestrianized Courtyards provide protected yard space in the middle of dense, amenity-rich neighborhoods
Okay. Revised Chicago 7 acre pinwheel proposal moves parking to outer perimeter and to one parking garage per block. The interior courtyards and central piazza stay car free.
