Sorry for an essay on a shitty SNL joke but this clip is the PERFECT encapsulation of how Establishment Democrats view Zohran’s social media success versus what he actually does on here. Zohran’s entire communication style is always clear and effective while simply adapting it to common vertical video production features (good audio, minimal dead air, moving shots). This is especially true when it comes to serious situations like storms, where he focuses on clear recommendations and updates for the viewer. He also incorporates his genuine personality as well into the videos to make them authentic. This clip, on the other hand, is the complete opposite of that. It assumes Zohran is leaning into a ridiculous TikTok dance trend that doesn’t communicate actual practical information to the audience about flood zones or services the city offers during storms. It could not be further from what Zohran actually does on social media. This is just a one-off bad joke but it honestly isn’t too far off for how many people in power view Zohran’s social media presence. And that’s also why they’ve never been able to replicate it.
like what is this??

it’s so ironic because this substance-less youth pandering is actually what establishment dems were doing when they failed to run kamala

The mismatch is real. What they portrayed vs the video he posts on the topic. Also checked YT comment section & most people couldn't relate & wanted actual Zohran to show up instead lol. One 1K+ likes comment even called out the tiktok joke as poor take.
New Yorkers, a storm is arriving today. Don't travel if you don't have to. Never drive or walk through floodwater. Call 911 if you are in danger, and report nonemergency issues to 311. Look out for one another and stay safe.

Mfs in the establishment dem space who clearly had a hand at writing this unfunny attempt at satire, when really it’s a mockery, think Zohran is doing Kamala style marketing via TikTok in 2024. She fell down from a coconut tree. It’s brat summer Zohran is above their paygrade

People make this mistake about communicating online in general, not just with Zohran, and especially when it comes to shortform video. Ultimately most people aren’t very articulate or good on camera, so they ridicule shortform as a coping mechanism.

Even if SNL writers do understand it (some on the Cast do, Sarah Sherman was a very engaged public supporter of his) The show isnt willing to represent his popularity as a Democratic Socialist and critic of Israel. All they're willing to do is "Hey I'm popular and charming lol"

It’s not that deep, SNL just never knows how to write about politicians they actually admire (see for example fucking Kate singing Hallelujah that one time)

It also assumes he’s well liked because of an active social media presence vs the actual reason that he’s liked…he gets shit done 🤷🏽‍♀️

I think the writing and premise are kinda bad but much more than that, the performance is terrible We know Mamdani is this extremely charismatic guy, we get his general ethos where this is... So limited? Actor missed the mark badly

Yeah, I f’ing hated this clip. It’s what shitlibs want to pretend Mamdani is. Would’ve been an unusually insightful clip if that was actually what they were aiming at.

Great points! I dunno why we gotta keep humoring this dead horse of a show as if it has clue about the current zeitgeist, especially when we had a perfectly good Mad TV to replace it with (RIP 1996-2009)

Essay appreciated. Meanwhile a jab at SNL — I have always felt it catered to non-NYers, depicting a version of the city that exists only in an outsider's imagination. So that's probably a factor here.
