Adding 12.4% (including employers’ share) would bring marginal federal rates to 50% — plus 15% in high tax states. That’s absurd. Combine means testing, age increases, and investments beyond treasurys like any other defined benefit plan.
Sanders isn't telling you the whole story. SSA confirms that uncapping the payroll tax would still leave permanent Social Security deficits. His solvency numbers are based on a proposal that includes other big tax hikes that go conveniently unmentioned in his tweet. 🙄

This is why I speak out so loudly against the drive towards socialism The below is a must-read. Please take the 2 minutes to do so.
I’m French. I want to talk to Americans who are about to vote Democrat. Not to insult you. To warn you. I come from your future. In France we did everything your progressive politicians promise. Free healthcare, free college, generous welfare, strong unions, heavy regulation, high taxes on the rich, a state that takes care of everything. Public spending close to 57% of GDP, one of the highest on the planet. On paper, it’s the dream. Here’s what it looks like from the inside. France hasn’t passed a balanced budget since 1974. Our debt is above 3,300 billion euros. Interest on that debt is becoming one of the biggest items in the national budget. Our hospitals are collapsing despite record funding. Our schools rank lower every year. Young people with degrees can’t afford an apartment in the city they were born in. Our best engineers leave for London, Zurich and San Francisco. And the rich you wanted to tax? They left too, and took the jobs with them. The promise was protection. The result is stagnation. The worst part is that nobody in France voted for decline. Every single step sounded generous, compassionate, reasonable. One more program. One more regulation. One more tax to fund it. Each step alone makes sense. Fifty years of them, and you wake up in a country that can no longer build a nuclear plant on time or keep its streets safe. I love America because it’s the one place on earth where people still believe they can build something from nothing. I came to Silicon Valley as a self-taught kid and it changed my life. That spirit is the most precious thing your country has. Before you vote, ask yourself one question: is the program you’re voting for making America more like America, or more like France? Trust me. You don’t want to be France.

Sadly, many will vote for more of this. We need responsible stewardship
Update: We're out the damn $14K. The city withheld our building permit because they argued that our new threading tenant would use a lot more water than the previous market/grocery tenant. The problem is, the city only has a "salon" category, meaning they see a threading salon as using the same amount of water as a hair salon. There is no separate category for threading, which uses barely any water at all. Nevertheless, they insisted on a $14K sewer impact fee unless we were able to show them another threading salon's water bill for reference. So our team sprung into action. I posted a $500 bounty here, and my team started calling threading salons like crazy. Not surprisingly, the common response to "hey, we're random people who need to see your water bill" was an abrupt hangup. The other problem with this logic is that small retail tenants don't commonly have their own water meter. We shared this with the city, and the general response was: "hey, we totally get it, but we answer to the Dublin San Ramon Services District, and there can be major legal consequences if we don't bill this sewer fee. You need to talk to them." So the team tried like mad, but it's nearly impossible to get ahold of an actual person who can help with this. And of course, nobody is going to go out on a limb and try to fix the situation. There is no competing sewer or water provider. So here we are. The clock is ticking, our tenant needs to open for business, and every day we lose costs us money too. Of course a threading salon is not a hair salon, but also, nobody cares. $14K gone. Sometimes you really can't fight city hall, no matter how nonsensical the argument is.

I’ve never heard skepticism of SS insolvency. Addressing it today must include reducing benefits, investing more aggressively, or raising taxes
Yup. Here are some Social Security Trustee projections of when the OASDI trust fund will hit insolvency: 1999 Report - 2034 2015 Report - 2034 2021 Report - 2034 2026 Report - 2034 Twitter: "Pfft, they've been predicting insolvency 30 years and it still hasn't happened!" 🙄

There is a substantial SS trust fund balance - dwindling to be sure - that could have been, and still could be, invested in something besides US debt. No other pension fund is run this conservatively
The repliers demanding that Social Security match S&P investment returns miss the point. SocSec cannot pay the returns from investments that never occured. You may not like that its setup as a pay-as-you-go system funded by future taxes, but that constrains benefits. (1/2)

A friend put $12,000 in a retirement account 30 years ago. Today, with no further contributions, the account is worth over $400,000. The power of compounding is huge.

Really solid advice
CNBC's Becky Quick offered three pieces of advice last month on The Master Investor Podcast: (1) Investing: "Do exactly what Warren Buffett says — which is to invest in an S&P 500 [index fund]. Do it early, do it often, and let it ride. And don't worry about what's happening [in the wider world]. That will get you far." (2) Career: "Every job you get, take it and do it for a little longer than you think you possibly can. Especially when you're starting out. I never planned to be in television — I never planned any of this — but staying and doing the job and doing it really well always led to other opportunities. Hang in there and be patient with it." (3) Life: "Cherish every moment. Life is too short. It is too precious. I still have to talk myself through this to make sure I'm living in the moment and enjoying every moment that we get."

Trump angry at big oil profits. Oil companies have no control over the price of retail gasoline. US oil production is already at a record and refining maxed out. Want to lower gasoline prices? Build more refineries. Only one built since 1976! cnbc.com/2026/08/03/trump-sa…

Everyone needs to hear this.
Extreme poverty worldwide has never been as low as it is today, and it's never fallen as fast as in recent decades. We need more facts and less ideology...

Billions of dollars do not change hands without people at the top knowing. Tim Walz and Keith Ellison knew. And when Congress asked them about it, they laughed. Minnesotans are not laughing. And they are not forgetting.
