I don't like like as a technique to always use but I think it can be useful for getting children used to estimating.
This is a technique that most of us use in our heads anyway and I'd only go for full-on long division if I needed a precise answer (and didn't have a calculator).

Unsurprisingly, these bottlenecks were never the developers' typing speed.

I remember being annoyed when I was around 14 not getting to go on the school trip for the students with the best grades. It was combined attainment and effort scores and my effort scores were terrible.
I get it more now I'm older.
